Does anyone have any idea of slimming your bum?

Lunges, Stairs, Cycling, Running.

Make sure that anything you're doing isn't heavy resistance training or you'll only bulk up. You need light repetition and exercise that creates longer, leaner muscles.

Trainers I know say, unequivocally SQUATS.

However, don't know if this would "trim" vs "tone."

Lots of walking. It works wonders and it's free. ;)

None of this will work. You can squat, lunge, benchpress, jumping-jack, etc and none of it will do jack for you unless you work out your diet first. If you want to trim a spot on your body down in means you have to lose weight. It is impossible to spot reduce fat on your body. You can't do situps to get abs and you can't to squats to get an ass unless your diet is in check.

What do you need to do to effectively lose weight? First you need to calculate your Base Metobolic Rate (BMR) which is the amount of calories you burn in a day if you were to just sleep all day. Then you need to calculate your maintenance (total calories burned in a day). There are many calculators online to do this so search and you'll find them.

Next you need to start eating a defecit of calories. Now when I say a defecit, I don't mean starve. You want to eat about -500 calories from your maintenance level. That way your body won't go into starvation mode. If you put your body into starvation mode it will begin to feed off muscle mass and not fat. You'll lose weight, but see no results. Thats why those pictures of starving africans always have skinny skinny arms, no musle mass, but this bloated belly.

Its healthy to lose around 2lbs per week unless you are really overweight then its acceptable to lose around 2% bodyweight per week. Any more and its either water weight (which will come right back) or muscle mass. Eat frequently, small meals, 6 times per day is ideal. Eat proteins, carbs, and good fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats). I like a 40/40/20 ratio respectively myself.

If you want to tone areas then thats when weight training comes in. Squats and lunges will tone those muscles, but losing the fat will bring it out.

I could go on for days but thats basically the jist of it.
