candy Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 not old fashioned! men SHOULD pay on the first date. even if he doesnt have much money, you can do something inexpensive, the point is if he's cheap now it will only get worse.......later on its ok for woman to pay or go dutch treat. i know the problems sometimes are if you make him pay you feel guilty, if you pay you feel resentful and if you go dutch its unromantic. thats always been my feelings! what to do in the 2000's!
sunshinegirl Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 To play devil's advocate... ...I wondered if maybe he felt confused about the etiquette - "Of course I'm paying for this. Oh wait, she just pulled out her card - and so fast! - I wonder if she's an independent sort of gal who will be offended if I usurp her and try to pay for it. Crap! What to do? Quick: offer to split the bill! Damn, this is awkward!" But then you wrote: So when I had put out my credit card, he simply asked; "oh did you want me to at least do half." If he was really that nonchalant about it, my theory is probably crap.
D-Lish Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 In today's world... the first date should often be split in two. I have had two dates lately where the guy had me pay. One guy pulled the whole "I forgot my wallet"... and the other was a grad student who claimed to have no money and promised to pay the next time. I didn't return either of their phone calls for a second date! I always insist on splitting the bill the first date. If I asked a guy out, I'd probably offer to pay though... but I don't ask men out- so that point is moot. D
