This phrase bugs me.

If you are in some kind of turmoil this has a very soothing effect. So in that light, it give one some measure of comfort that some good will come of the situation. Though a lot of times the affected person hearing it has to think what "reason" could possibly be worth this?

But I have seen more than a few cases where people use this as an excuse to sooth their own conscience about things they have done. Like just because they have an option, it's some sign that they should explore it regardless of the consequences.

People toss this phrase around like candy but is it even helpful to either party really? Just curious what ya'll think about it.

I've always had major problems with this (surprise surprise)... I'd like to believe its true but it seems like a rationalization to make people feel better about things they have 0 control over.

Someone's reasoning this bull****? We need to fire that guy.

Hate it, along with every other token catch phrase people will throw at you because they don't know anything to say to you.

It's wishful thinking to make people feel better about the crap that happens in their life and can't be shown to be otherwise

Anything can be justified in hindset. You can always conjure up a reason why for virtually anything AFTER THE FACT, but that doesn't make it so. Crap happens, its as simple as that and there is often no rhyme nor reason behind it. Even if there was a God, why would he need to pre-ordain every single little thing that happens to us? He wouldn't. He'd just let things run their course.

You're right! What a B.S. statement! People say it with the best intentions but it's really something said with brain in neutral.

I never really put much stock in it myself, but I noticed a short after my wife betrayed me that she said it, as if, something "just happened". Like somehow there wasn't deceit, lies, or conscious effort involved.

It just struck me that if a murderer used the statement to defend his actions, it wouldn't really go over too well. Then later, I kept hearing people telling me it over and over as if somehow, all that I am going through will at some point be "worth it".

After you suffer the most devastating, traumatic event of your life, your going to wake up and enjoy the life you always wanted, it's going to be so wonderful that everything you went through won't even cross your mind. It pales in comparison to the life you thought you loved and since this has happened, there's a good reason for it.......

Just sounds a lot like gambling everything but your last dollar away and then betting that dollar on the long odds. When you rationalize the context of both sides using it, either I'm more dense than I think I am or people are idiots?

There is one way this cliche applies, "cause and effect". Everyone seems to overlook this aspect though and I think it does more harm than good when they do.

Yeah, it's just a line. Not much more. I mean, unless you firmly believe in a particular God or religion. Then I could understand how that'd work... kind of.

People say, "Everything happens for a reason." I say, "Everything just happens." Really, what more fabricated reason do you need to know to get through the day?
