Cherry Blossom 35 Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I've been emailing this guy from an online site. He looks like he might be cute in his picture, but it is small so I can't really tell. Anyway, I noticed in his last email that he misspelled two words and did not add an apostrophe where one was required. He spelled architects, architehcts (extra "h"). He spelled restaurant, resteraunt. He wrote someones, instead of someone's. That kind of bugs me. Does he not know how to use spell check? Actually, he shouldn't even need to use spell check. An educated person should know how to spell those words. What do you think, LS members?

He may have not taken the time to edit his messages to you because it was more important that they be delivered, you know? also, my personal opinion is that the internet makes you a sloppy/sloppier writer. I'm bad about the lowercase letters starting off the first word in the first sentence in a paragraph, and HORRIBLE about not using proper casing when signing off an email ... even work-related ones! And I'm a professional writer, for Pete's sake! other thing is that your guy might have learned a different style when it came to grammar and spelling. My husband can't spell properly to save his life, and his mother blamed the State of California for teaching phonetics-based spelling in third grade, which screwed him up for life. However, DH is a pretty bright guy, especially when it comes to how things work, and the various and sundry bits of information about whatever it is you want to know. Just don't ask him to write it down, but tell you verbally

That is ridiculous. I am doing the online thing to meet more people, not to cut them off for no reason. I have gone out with people who wouldn't get a second glance from me in a bar because I found them charming online.

Yes, I am a word "neatnik" like you, but I do find I sometimes hit the reply key too quickly on LS. However, if I am writing to a man in whom I am interested, then you had better believe I will take a couple extra moments to review my message.

What do you think, LS members? wait a minute, slow down. i never capitalize when i email or blog or use message boards, i misspell sometimes, and i dont use apostrophes when i am being impersonal (or personal depending on how you look at it). i fancy myself as being pretty smart and educated, i choose to type like this because i feel comfortable doing it, and its kinda unique. i like using Firefox over Internet Explorer because of the automatic spell check, so that i dont totally look like an idiot to everyone else. now i would be cautious about that picture situation. usually people take long distance shots because they are ashamed to really show themselves. sometimes it turns out to be nothing, but sometimes its because they're shrek clones or distant relatives of madusa (i am not shallow i date all types, shapes, forms, and looks). something is not right if his picture is taken from afar.

shadowplay Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 I think in most cases really bad spelling suggests poor education, but there are exceptions. My ex was extremely smart but couldn't spell for shiot. If the content of what this guy says is consistent with his bad spelling then that's more of a problem.

Eventhough I enjoy people who can write it wouldn't stop me from meeting someone who has many other qualities.. Only 3 little mistakes.. no big deal..

When I read the title I thought it would be something, along the lines of him mispelling every word. Maybe he dont want to proof read or go in his settings to add (') just for casual convo online. If he types words like: by/buy night/knight eye/I threw/through meet/meat then you may have a problem!

Good.. because Nazi should be capitalized I reverse letters all the time becuase and many other words that I repeat misspell.. The issue I have is that I have clicked to add those many words to my spell check dictionary and it never finds them as being misspelled anymore and I can't find the damn database in the FireFox plugin to reverse the adds.. I don't think it says anything other than maybe he was in a hurry and didn't run spell check... If it continues then just offhandedly say something to him about it to see if he uses spell check...

Sometimes, you can almost tell how someone speaks by their misspellings. If you're concerned, why not ask for a different picture of him, one that's clear and not sectioned off pieces of him. People who usually post pieces of themselves, have something to hide. Think myspace.

I guess I think that a word like restaurant is kind of basic. If English was not his first language, then I wouldn't think twice. Could be a typo, too.
