I've seen accidentical bum-slappings happening! In any case, you were there so you know best. You can't do it over but maybe for next time, talk it out properly before leaving without warning, or maybe leave a note to explain why you are leaving? It looks like he thought his feelings weren't acknowlwdged properly, for some reason.

Not saying anyone's at fault (could be lack of sleep for all I know) but it seems like a very trivial incident to ruin a friendship of 3 years.
