What are the regular business hours in your country?

Recommended Posts

I thought it might be fun to find out what hours are standard in your country or what hours you work... Especially since we have folks from all over the world here. I know in some countries, like France working hours are much less...

I am in the U.S, in California and here standard hours are 8-5 and those are the hours that I work. 1 hour for lunch, so that's a total of 8 hours working and 1 hour of lunch. I would MUCH prefer to work 8-4 (with an hour of lunch) and get paid less, however that option is not available to me! I have to work 8-5. I find those hours rather long to be honest. I am usually exhausted and drained when I get off work.

So what country are you from and what hours do you work? Are your hours common and do you find them exhausting?

I'm in the UK, and I suppose the standard working hours are 9-5, though it varies of course, depending on the type of work and the location. 9-5 with an hour for lunch would be fairly standard office hours, but in London many people work longer hours than that. I know a lot of people who work more like 8-6 or even longer, and have done so myself in the past. Add to that a typical commute to work of an hour (for those working in London) at either end of the day and it makes a very long day out of the house.

At the moment I'm working a 4 day week (30 hours) spread over 5 days, meaning I can get home before the rush hour and not long after the kids get back from school, which suits me fine. :)

Also, what about holidays/leave? Here in the UK, I think 4 weeks leave a year is fairly standard, with many people getting 5 or even 6 weeks after they've worked for an organisation for a certain amount of time. I understand that you don't get so much time off work in the US, is that right?

In the U.S it's usually 2weeks of vacation unless you've been there a long time. At my place you would need to be there at least 5 years for 3 weeks I think. 4 weeks leave sounds amazing.

I wasn't aware that most people in London worked longer than 9-5... I figured that was what the majority was pulling in and I was envious. I find 8-5 excruciatingly long; there's no time to do anything else (and my commute is 6 min, I moved right next to work).

I really don't think you can generalize like that. It largely depends on what you do for a living, the industry you're in, and whether you're exempt from overtime.

I'm in California too, and wouldn't agree with your assessment, especially management and other salaried employees exempt from overtime.

Do you mind if I ask what type of industry or field this is in? Medical, finance, what?

How do you have time to post on Loveshack? How do you have time to do anything else? Do you have time to exercise? Watch tv?

I work 8-5, have a 6-7 min commute and still find I don't have time for anything (and I'm single with no family).

I would feel the same as you, OP. Working hours where I am are typically 8-4 (although in NO WAY does my bf's working hours conform to that, ugh), whereas working hours in my homeland were anything between 8-4, 9-5, or 8am-11pm, depending on who and what you worked for. :p

I have heard from Singaporean friends working 8am - 2am on a daily basis. One of them did earn enough in her first TWO years after graduation to pay off her $250,000 international education scholarship though (you can work 10 yrs for our Govt or pay it off), so I suppose they at least get compensated well for it.

No wonder I avoided that place like the plague.

8-4 is good, I would kill to work 8-4... I have to work 8-5, that's much worse! That extra one hour makes a monumental difference.

I work 8am to 9pm most days, with a lot of travel.

I manage an area in the retail industry. I need to be available 7 days a week- I can't even turn my phone off.

The pay isn't ideal, but it's good enough.

But the difference in annual leave between the USA and the UK correlates with a difference in salary levels - generally higher in the US. So you work more days but you do also get paid for that.

8:30-5pm with an hour lunch or 9-5 with a half hour of lunch have been my jobs. I prefer to go home the half hour personally...

We are, by law, entitled to 4 weeks of paid annual leave a year. And most places will allow another 2 weeks unpaid. Minimum wage here is a lot better than most countries as well.
