"Damaged people are dangerous, because they know they can survive"

When I first stumbled across this one I realized that my whole life I have viewed myself as damaged goods, and now I understand that each hardship I survive makes me that much stronger, there isn't much I couldn't survive at this point...

"We never really change, we only become more fully what we are." Lestat

A Vampire motivational quote... ehhh why not.

And I love Desiderata... it's a poem, not just a quote, but there has been a copy of this poem hanging on my wall for most of my life.

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender,

be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly;

and listen to others,

even to the dull and the ignorant;

they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons;

they are vexatious to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others,

you may become vain or bitter,

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble;

it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs,

for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals,

and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection.

Neither be cynical about love,

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,

it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline,

be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe

no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,

whatever you conceive Him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations,

in the noisy confusion of life,

keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,

it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

"Do not assume that she who seeks to comfort you now, lives untroubled among the simple and quiet words that sometimes do you good. Her life may also have much sadness and difficulty, that remains far beyond yours. Were it otherwise, she would never have been able to find these words.” - Rainer Maria Rilke

A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French porn.

Every day you may make progress. Every step may be fruitful. Yet there will stretch out before you an ever-lengthening, ever-ascending, ever-improving path. You know you will never get to the end of the journey. But this, so far from discouraging, only adds to the joy and glory of the climb.

And the User Names above is the one phrase that has "helped" me deal with many of life's troubles.

"This Too Shall Pass."

This too shall pass. Do not fret the difficulties too much. Tomorrow they will be gone.

This too shall pass. Enjoy the good stuff. Tomorrow they will be gone.

When we first had children, we had sleepless nights and crying babies. Sometimes those nights and days seemed to be forever, but they passed. As they grew older, they crawled then walked. As each stage arrives and passes, we have new worries and joys. As I come upon difficulties in life, then I try to remember that "this too shall pass."

Enjoy each moment...tomorrow they will be gone and missed.

That's nice to know, JamesM. I don't have a copyright to that user name, but I still feel that it's "me", on these forums.

There's another thread that asks for the meaning of your LS username. I could've copied and pasted what you wrote about "This too shall pass", in there.

And you may copy and paste. I remember when I joined LS in Dec of 2005, the first time I saw your name, I thought..."There is my phrase." Not that I have a patent on it, but I have used it many times since our first child was born in 1995. So I have wondered why you chose that name. If we all remembered that one phrase, we would stop worrying that today will last forever...and we will also realize that today will not last forever.

So, did you post on that thread why you chose your name?

Well, I'd already discussed my choice of user name a bit, when I first joined the forums.

My reasons for choosing the name were definitely related to the hope that this phrase gave, and the reminder that life is a series of highs and lows - one will follow the other. The "in-between lull", too, is a preparation for the next phase.

Nothing is permanent. If it doesn't perish, it will change into something else. But it won't last forever in the same form.

Every man is a damn fool for at least five minutes every day; wisdom consists in not exceeding the limit.

- Elbert Hubbard

Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age. Sometimes age just shows up all by itself.

- Tom Wilson

Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is.

- Francis Bacon

Humor is perhaps a sense of intellectual perspective: an awareness that some things are really important, others not; and that the two kinds are most oddly jumbled in everyday affairs.

- Christopher Morley
