Public holidays? Especially for atheist and single...

Recommended Posts

Good Friday here and then the Easter Monday.

I have no tradition with these religious holidays. but everything closes. can't even buy grocery.

Cold and raining outside. What can people do with holidays? besides stay at home watch a movie and read a book?

No where to go. Public holidays feel like a prison. I guess it's good for people who have a partner and/or children though. single? no such religious tradition? :(

anyone resonates with such sentiments?

I guess you're not in the US? Almost everything is still open the entire weekend here.

Yeah I'm not sure where you are, but it sucks if truly everything closes.

Even then, enjoy the time off work any way you can! Work out at home! Grab a good book or three! Try out some new recipes! Binge a new series (the new Queer Eye is great, for example, and will get you thinking even after watching).

I am a fellow atheist, and yeah they holidays annoy me, but I've learned to go with the flow.

Good opportunity to rest up and relax. However, in the US, everything is open and I'm going to a casino out of state. So I'll be $115 ($100 donation to slots plus $15 buffet) poorer plus auto gas next time you see me.

Easter doesn't affect me the way Christmas does. My solution: hide from it. I booked a 2 week cruise to avoid all of it. In leaner years I have gone to friends' homes, visited distance family out of state, one year I just shut myself up in the house, ate comfort food & binge watched TV.

Yes, in the US, we’ve learned the power of retail. ?

Usually movie theaters are open even when most things aren’t. Just prepare for the day ahead of time. Those down times are actually good.

That is most definitely what I would do, and I loved every moment.

My other plan for Easter weekend - spring cleaning. Every day, chose a different job. You can get a lot done and yet it doesn’t feel like you are spending your whole weekend cleaning.

And of course, you can go out on Saturday and almost anything commercial is open on Monday. There may be designated “home” days, but there are also opportunities to go out.

This is my favourite long weekend of the whole year!! Glass is half full, or half empty. You decide.

Atheist here, as well.

I just got done painting (primer) in my master bathroom. Going to eat some lunch and start installing a new shower control. So, I'll be sweating copper the rest of the afternoon.

Over the weekend, I may trim the trees. It got warm here and everything is growing out of control. I trimmed the Oleander last weekend, now the rest of the trees and landscaping look like crap by comparison.

The cold north, Canada. Winter just done. Spring hasn't really arrived yet. I don't know how other singles not ended up in mental hospital if they don't like winter sports.

Also cold north here, Winterpeg. My friends and coworkers have all managed to stay out of the mental hospital by going for coffee/tea with friends, sitting by the warm fire to read a book or watch television, going to the guy to sweat it out, having a hot bath, going to a movie... there are lots of options, if you are willing to consider them.

Think of something that you've put off but want to do (e.g. a project, activity, some sort of self improvement). Plan a bit in advance and be ready to do it when the day comes. This response is a bit late for Easter, but maybe when the next holiday comes around.

Another athiest here. I did a lot of work on a shirt I've been sewing. It's been a wretched project because I didn't spend enough time on pattern drafting and am paying the price now. Have thankfully broken the back of the project now and am down to the last finishes.

But the main difference is that you don't go to work. So going to work for you is an escape from the reality of being alone. If you talk about feeling like being in a prison, then actually the prison exists on work days as well, you just pretend it's not there. Maybe you ought to get more active in seeking a mate, since single life doesn't suit you, especially where you are.

Atheist here....

Does Canada really shut down for the whole Easter weekend?

Besides, what does chocolate, chicken eggs and bunny rabbits have to do with Jesus? Its a celebration of spring really.

That said I am in California and spring is in full swing. A friend and I are hauling our horses out go cross country jump on Easter, we are hoping the horse park will be nice and quiet due to the holiday!

I have actually learned to cherish these holidays that I do not celebrate. Christmas is a great day for hike or a trip to the coast as traffic is less and the parks are deserted.

We always have lots of Asian food options for dining out.

In my area, grocery stores may have limited hours etc, but the town is far from shut down, especially on Easter Sunday.

I normally would like to go to the gym. but as a woman, there are a few days of a month you don't want to sweat it out. Movie? Nowadays, everything seems deja vu, there are only that many genre and story-lines...and I have to find someone to go with me as well.

Yes, that's what I discovered. More than half of the year is WINTER! I grew up in subtropical area. Now, winter and more winter...

Wow, business as usual here. I worked a full day. Commuter train was a little light but pretty typical for a Friday. All stores etc have normal hours Friday, Saturday and Monday. Some will have limited hours Sunday - but not most.

I think a lot of us (ignorant Americans who have only been as far as Toronto) would say, "how do you end up not in the mental hospital PERIOD up there?"

(I kid...but I'm sure it adds a whole 'nother layer to the difficulty of dating.)

Same here. I went out to dinner tonight, going out to dinner tomorrow night, and to lunch Sunday. If I needed to get groceries....not sure about the hours on Sunday....but that would be my only "restriction."

Most things are closed Friday and Sunday. It’s an important weekend for those of faith, with many going to church. Many will have a family dinner or brunch at some point this weekend.

Malls and restaurants are open on Saturday but it is often busy, everyone goes out! Most things are open Monday except government offices. It’s the best day of the year for many of my coworkers because kids are in school, husbands are working, but we have the day off.

I know.

Look, I was single for a really long time. I know what it is to be lonely and to be home all weekend, watching others doing the “family stuff” you want to do... it’s not fun.

But seriously, I lived by the quote “you are never lonely if you are good company.” It’s important to find things that you enjoy, and do them. Whether it is alone or with a friend, there is lots that you can do.

I’m blessed to have a partner now, but he spends every other weekend with his son. I look forward to those weekends! I love having time to myself, to do the things that I enjoy... even if it is just spring cleaning or watching a favorite movie.

Too much alone time, is not a good thing. But, there is plenty that you can do... i hope you find something fun to do this weekend.
