Yesterday evening I was reading whilst my son was doing some sociology homework. He was going through case studies about working families. he threw out a few statistics then said 'hang on though, I've never ever known you to have a job where you work *less* than 48 hours a week, but we've always spend loads of time together and done activities, gone places...'.

I sheepishly said 'that's because, mostly, I didn't have hobbies or much of a social life, I was either at work or with you.... Good job we get along so well!'. He replied: 'I think we get along because we always have spent time together, most of my friends didn't or don't.'

Now, I remember calling him to say goodnight from work, or missing school plays, being late and he's the kid waiting outside, coat on, with the child care manager, last one there because I've got held up at work. The tears I've shed, I have beaten myself up for years about it all. But if that's how he feels about it, I'll take it :p
