Searching for friends & opportunity

Recommended Posts

I recently decided to start life over. I quit my job and moved from Jackson, MS to Long Island, NY. I was tired of prejudice being so commonly accepted/expected and I was tired of people saying there's nothing to do.

Now I've been living on Long Island and I realized that I am 1 of like maybe 20 minorities on the whole island. My roommates frequently say there's nothing to do, even though New York City is so close by.

I thought all young people in New York had drive, and it was easy for me to think that while living in Jackson, MS. I was dead wrong. Because I work every day, I have no time to really get out and meet people. I just work. I see the same people every single day and I feel even more out of place than I did in Jackson MS. At least there I wasn't the only minority.

I chose Long Island because I found a great pad, but it looks like I have no choice but to move to NYC.

What were you expecting? Long Island is about as culturally homogenous as it gets. Queens and Brooklyn are the real melting pots. Your roommates don't make any sense. You could make a case that New York has the most "things to do" on the planet. People stay up all night. Everything's always open.

Long Island is pricey but not so much that it necessitates "drive." It's not the city. If don't have drive in the city, you won't survive. Odds are your apartment won't be nearly as nice but you'll have a lot more fun and you won't be in it as much anyways.

Best of luck.
