The paradox of choice with Meetups and overbooking

I'm pretty sure this would fall into the "In Search Of" category as Meetup is a venue for people in search of new friendships/relationships...

Anyhow, I got into a small group discussion with others about how some organizers thought people that joined Meetup joined way too many Meetup groups.

If you look at peoples' profiles, you can see some people that have joined up to 50 or 60 Meetups, and obviously they aren't attending nearly that much and some aren't even attending at all...it's been suggested most are just lurking and nothing more.

I once had someone contact me about an event (I wasn't an organizer), where certain preparations should have already been made by members MONTHS ago (i.e.- booking a hotel room). Not a single room was available and she was wanting to go to the event 2 days before it started, while the rest of us had made preparations months ago.

She was like "Well, I guess that sometimes happens, I say 'Yes', to all these events, then when it comes around, I don't realize I overbook myself."

Some suggested that Meetups should have a limit cap on how many Meetups a person can join.

I even recall a woman leaving a restaurant gathering for a sushi Meetup already after she placed her order...she took it in a "to-go" container and left our Meetup. Rather rude on her part.

"Oh, gee, I forgot I had another Meetup going on around this time! See ya later!"

People tend to use a shotgun approach saying "Yes" to all these events, then wind up screwing themselves by overbooking.

Unfortunately, this results in the inability to build friendships with others.

Meetup did have a time where people would only go to 2 or 3 Meetups routinely, but now there's this "revolving door" of people coming in and out of them.

That being said, in the general scheme of things, do you think with social media and the availability of "everything" is causing people to burn candle at both ends needlessly?

Why do people insist on double or even triple booking events on the same day or even at the last minute?
