Well if you are born into a society that holds male babies more valuable than female and you have gender ratios of 116 - 150 men for every 100 women 72 virgins in paradise forever can start to look, ummmmmm, not so bad.
There must be a lot of young middle eastern men bursting with unused fluids that just know they ain't gonna get laid in this lifetime.

I spent a lot of time in the Middle East, talked to a lot of folks, and their obsession with virginity is a bit strange. The wife HAS to be a virgin. Also, they don't have Western inhibitions against insest, so it might be a sister, but HAS to be a virgin....

It's not in the Qu'ran. It's in a hadith. Hadith Al-Tirmidhi in the Book of Sunah (volume IV), chapters on The Features of Paradise as described by the Messenger of Allah, chapter 21, About the Smallest Reward for the People of Paradise:
The Prophet Muhammad was heard saying: 'The smallest reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from Al-Jabiyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana'a [Yemen]."

Verily, for the Muttaqun [righteous], there will be a success (paradise); gardens and grapeyards; and young full-breasted (mature) maidens of equal age; and a full cup (of wine)" (An-Naba 78:31-34).
The biggest problem with Islam is that no Muslim is assured of heaven. It's all "Allah knows." So things like Jihad and piety help muslims along on their uncertain path to heaven. All muslims go to hell first and await the day of judgment to see if they can go to heaven unless you're a true martyr.
on hell: There will be no one of you who will not enter it (Hell). This was an inevitable decree of your Lord. Afterwards he may save some of the pious, God-fearing Muslims out of the burning fire. -- Sura 19:71-72

(It looks like virginity growing back is a recurrent topic also in some old religions - you found that in greek mythology, too)
I remember my bf joking about how distressful it is to have sex with a virgin, and commenting that if your 72 women were to grow back their virginity every time you couldn't really get to have much fun with them.
A couple of years ago some guy did a study on that particular subject and after some words meaning analysis he pointed out that the word that is used to refer to virgins in the Coran (and is translated as"virgins") was commonly used to mean "white grapes" - so perhaps martyrs can actually get to taste 72 different kinds of white grapes (?!?).
The study sounded like bogus, but it was interesting to read.

2. cannot kill the old, sick or mentally ill
3. you cannot destroy any places of worship or kill any Priest's/rabbi/monks/religues people
4.cannot steal or rape
5.most respect property

Just for the record - I was against the invasion of Iraq & marched, with a million other people, in the streets of London to demonstrate that. Though that didn't seem to matter to 4 particular Muslims who blew themselves up on the Tube.
In this country (the UK) the moderate Muslim voice seems to be a rarity. Frightening that 23% of Muslims polled here said that the July 7th bombers were justified in their actions.

Yes, the West needs to be more conscious of your ways and beliefs, but the Muslim world most also be aware of ours. One thing is that we question and joke about EVERYTHING.
