Feeling GUILTY

Hello,
I left my LT bf of 8 years, due to the fact that he could not commit to me and me being in my early 30's I knew I was ready for marriage, He just wanted to live together with no sign of an engagment...As I loved him very much, I just knew what I wanted and I wanted a husband and a family...Well it has been about 1 1/2 years since we broke up and we still remain friends, but my feelings are different towards him, I feel more of an obligation to talk to him, because I feel bad that he is all alone in another state.

Well now he calls me today and says how down he is and how he misses the North. He currently lives in the South.. I don't know what to do, I feel bad, how do I handle this situation?

any advice would be appreciated!
