Question How do I get a new girl interested?

I got out of a long term relationship that ended horribly and still has some effects on me. I just transfered colleges so im new to my school and i am having trouble making new friends especially meeting new girls. I used to be a confident person and didnt have much issues making friends. After my ex broke my heart and did all those horrible things i have lacked confidence and havnt been able to form any relationships with girls...

There is this girl who i think is really attractive and sweet in one of my classes, but she is kinda quiet. We talk in class some and i do catch her looking at me periodically and we at times catch eachothers eyes. I am having trouble trying to form this class room conversation in to a friendship and ideally more than that if possible but i dont seem to know how to do that. I dont want to come off as just another guy hitting on her, but at the same time i dont want to be just one of those guys who is just friend material (almost like a girlfriend to her) How do i raise the level of conversation and prehaps get her to hangout?

I feel kind of intimidated and nervous because this is one of the first girls i have been interested in since my last relationship so i obviously am afraid of being hurt or getting my confidence shattered even further. I also dont want to make her feel awkward. I want to be able to gain her trust and have this girl genuinely like me for who i am rather than for what i own. I also dont want to be a cocky ******* like most of the guys on my campus are though they seem to be the ones with all the girls.

are there any tips anyone can offer about breaking the nervous tension i have, any good ways to further the conversation, or any other suggestions at all. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Cool my 2 cents

Look through some magazines until you come across an interesting picture or an article. Cut it out and bring it to school and say : Hey I was looking in a magazine when I came across this really cool ______ and just wanted to show it to you and wonder what you think ?.

Its pretty open ended. If she thinks you are cool she will likely start a convo ~ unless she is really shy. Its the gateway to a conversation opener.

If she looks at you like you are crazy then leave it alone and move on..

I also wanted to ad : that while you are still hurting your wounds are fresh and you fear someone lashing at your wounds again . I would get stronger inside and keep her as a friend until you feel better and can handle a possible relationship ( if thats what you are looking for )
