Guy in love since childhood?

Hey there,
Ok, usually it is the crazy girl who thinks they've met their soulmate, but this is a little different. I have a friend whom I have known since I was 8 years old. When we were 14, we decided to "go out" which meant we held hands for a summer and that was about it. Well, we've gone back and forth being friends and not being friends and whatnot since we were 14, but we've never seriously dated. Well, now we're 22 and this guy still thinks we're meant to be! He has always told me he's known we were supposed to be together from the first time I smiled at him when I was 8 years old and I "lit up his life with my smile." Seriously guys, who thinks they've had love at first sight when they were 8? I thought it was cute at first, but now that he has asked me out while we are older, I'm wondering if I should start taking him seriously? The only thing stopping me is that he has a child now and I'm only 22, I don't really want to get in the middle of anything. Any suggestions or has anybody else experienced a similar situation?
Thanks,
Sparkles
