So, come the new year, I'm gonna try and loose 15-20 lbs by the end of May. I've started step one today. Giving up caffeine. After the New Year, I'll give up all non-water beverages, unless there is a group outing, then light beer. I haven't got the headache yet, but I bet it will be here by the end of the day. I can't take any anti-inflammatory, does Tylenol help with caffeine headaches?
First off, congrats! Taking a step to improve yourself is always a good thing. I have lost almost 30 pounds since Nov 11, and all because I don't eat fast food anymore, nor do I eat any sugar. Little changes get big results.
The best over-the-counter pain reliever I have encountered is Excedrin Migraine. I don't get migraines (knock wood), but for mild headaches/hangovers it works fast and there is no stomach upset. I have found that Tylenol tears up my belly something awful.
I have also found that red wine "feels" better than beer--even light beer--does. And Guiness is better than most light beers for health, believe it or not. It is more nutritious, has less sugar, and won't dehydrate you like most lagers or light beers will. Any stout is probably the same, I'd guess.
Your best bet is to NOT go cold turkey with the caffine, but rather reduce your intake over a period of time. Google it, you should get plenty of advice. It's the only way to do it with out suffering a whole host of side effects including the headaches.
LittleKitty is right, don't go cold turkey with caffeine, wean yourself off. I gave it up about a month ago. It didn't help with weight loss but it's never a bad thing to give up. I used to drink a lot of caffeine and by weaning off I didn't get any headaches.
I have to go cold turkey with caffeine, I don't have enough control to just have one coke. The idea for weight loss is really to give up soda, and I HATE diet soda, so I'm not switching. I add tons of calories to my diet through various liquids, but mainly through soda. I chose this week, cause we are going to Hawaii on Thursday, and if I'm grogy, no problem, I'll just lay on the beach. The headache part should be over by Thursday.
My stomach has never had any problems with any pain reliever, but I've also never been able to find one that works on caffeine headaches. I'll try Excedrine Migrane, thanks for the recommendation!!
We still do the "bar hopping" thing, so beer is better than wine for that atmosphere, but I'll try Guiness. I didn't used to like it, but I haven't had it in a couple of years. I have heard that it has less calories and what not.
I went to the store to get the Excedrin. Just to make sure it didn't have any anti-inflammatories, I checked the contents. It's got caffeine in it. So, while I'm sure it would help with caffeine headaches....not so great for breaking the addiction. I went with Tylenol, and it's taken the edge off, although I can definitely still feel it.
Giving up regular soda is a good idea, but you don't have to give up caffeine entirely (and you probably shouldn't). You could switch to green tea. That's good for weight loss.
