Here is my question I know it sounds stupid, but no one can answer it for me...
So here it is....... Why does the wedding ring go behind the engagement ring on the ring finger?

Jumping Jehosafat!

Ask me how electron-hole transfer in a semiconductor works, ask me to explain Von Neuman computer architecture, ask me to calculate the velocity of an electron travelling down a cathode ray tube, but ask me something EASIER than that one! Sheesh!

I can probably answer this one. Though its more just ring related.

The ring is a relatively modern thing for modern day proposals.
Back during the dark ages (aka a long time ago), marriages were like arranged, rarely agreed upon, and definately not consentual.

Ever notice like how the bride is on the left and the groom is on the right when in front of the priest? Anyways, the most practical reason for this was so the dude tied the woman's right hand with rope, so:

1) she couldnt run away
2) the wedding could go through
3) leaves the right hand for the man free with his sword in case some problems come up.

Thats why the ring is on the guys left hand, and on the females right hand.
Its a type of symbolism for rope or whatever that binds the group.

As for the engagement ring thing, I think its rope times 2.
But your guess is as good as mine in that area.

Actually I had always heard that it was closer to the heart and that the engagement ring (a sort of promise ring if you will) was there to protect the love represented by the weddding ring.

Ask my why or how I know this and I have not a clue!

I have always heard that wedding rings for males AND females are on the left hand. Never seen a woman with one on her right--at least in the US

Maybe in Europe. Not North America.

Used to be right hand in E. Europe. Don't know if that's still the case.

Wiki says:
Quote:
In most Western cultures, the wedding ring is worn on the left hand. In some countries, however, such as Germany, Norway, and Chile, it is worn on the right hand. Orthodox Christians, Eastern Europeans and Jews also traditionally wear the wedding band on the right hand.

for most guys, after a time the ring migrates from the left hand to the nose...........then you realize that you are REALLY SCREWED!
