Unhappy Engagement is off. Would like to sell ring but not sure how. Any ideas?

Note: Posted in a couple of forums. Not really sure where it should go.

Hi All,

Well as is typical around these parts, my engagement recently ended. It was a long term relationship, 6 years, with a 6 month engagement. The details are really not important. Needless to say we are both very young (only 26), the breakup was mutual, and we both feel that this is the right decision for both of us.

She wants to return the ring to me, and I think I want it back. I would like to recoup as much of my initial costs as possible. The ring cost close to $5000, but is appraised at $7500, and I did get a really good (legit) deal on the diamond. I would be happy making as much as $4000, or more, but do not want to go the pawn shop route. Ebay also seems a little sketchy given that I would be a 1st time seller.

Does anybody have any ideas? It is a nice ring, Galen&Abacci tension set, nearly 1ct large and it looks like a million bucks!

It is really too bad things didn't work out. We both love the ring! However, a wise man once said "we will always have Paris".

One forum is OK Bob, your post will be seen.

Try an ad in the paper. Get a written appraisal from a reputable jeweler in your area so prospective buyers can confirm it.

consignment

Find a reputable jeweller in your area that does consignment - they'll basically sell your ring (of course there's no guarantee someone will buy it) and take a % of what you make for it............could be 20%. If you go this route, ensure the ring is insured properly...and ask your insurance company if you'd be covered if you went the consignment route and something happened to the ring while not in your possession (or would the store's insurance cover it?).
