who takes whos last name, or do you want a whole new on?

i was watchin this news show called the daily buzz here in dallas, and it was talking about marriages and names....it was saying that some wives dont take their husbands last names and vice versa and they just opt to develop a whole new last name altogether...if married, who took whos name? if not married yet, would u take your husband/wife to be name? or would u make up a whole new last name?

Me, i would do a combination of both of our last names, or we'd flip a coin..

When I got married I kept my last name and added my husbands.. when I had my Little people they were given BOTH last names as well...

When I divorced my husband (ha!) I dropped his last name BUT Whoo! LOL Both of my Little Peeps will always have my last name FIRST and his secondary... My oldest daughter actually goes by my last name only in school.

I took my husband's name. We are both pretty traditional that way.

The couple should work it out, but I'm cool with the default. Besides, if you won't take the gift of my name, then I'm not offering the gift that is the ring...

Also helps if the woman has a dopey maiden name.

All depends on your thoughts on the matter.

I am very porud of my last name and its heritage. I don't accept not changing it or hyphenated names.

I would take the man's last name.

And yes, I have a dopey maiden name so I'm betting I can't find a man with a worse one

My theory is, If you love the man with all your heart and just know that he's the one you want to be with. Then I would be honored to take his last name. I don't think I would use mine as well. If there was a divorce then I would change my name back. I'm traditional as well. It's just those people that want to act like there movie stars and change everything.

I'm so p-whipped my boys get on me, saying I'm going to change my name to hers. Uh, nope. She's changing hers to mine. None of that hyphenating business for us either. There's a bit of a ball-buster stigma, IMO, attached to women that are more non-traditional that way.

I'm very traditional- when I got married the first time I changed my name to my husband's last name. Since the divorce I kept his last name because the kids have that last name. He never even asked me to change it back.

My bf didn't know how I wanted to handle this since we're getting married. He actually asked me if I wanted to keep my exh's last name because of the kids. I said, are you crazy? It might be easier to do that, but there is no way I'm being married to you and keeping his last name!

His exwife hyphenated her last name with his. To me, unless you're a celebrity or have a high profile professional job- that's just silly. When I first heard this I was like, is she a lawyer or something? Nah, she's just a secretary. I think she thought it sounded like she was important.

It's kinda neat to think about having a different last name and initals after all these years!

I didn't hyphenate my last name when I got married, I just added my husbands at the end... it wasn't because I thought I was more important or anything and when we were married I went by his last name only but I didn't drop my name...

My reasons were maybe odd... but when I was growing up I never knew my Mom's parents.. they had abandon her when she was 3 and because I was little and had no idea of anything I grew up thinking that when a woman got married it meant they also became seperated from thier family and didn't see them anymore... lol dumb kid I guess! It wasn't until I was probably 9 that I asked about it and that fear was put to rest... BUT my other issue with wanting to keep my name was because my Dad never had any sons... nor did his brother.. they are the last 2 in thier family line... and it was important to my Dad that his family name and heritage be carried on, so I kept my last name and gave it to my Kiddo's as well... it wasn't meant as disrespect to my then husband and he understood where I was coming from... it isn't that I didn't want his name as well, I just didn't want to drop my family name.

My wife wanted to take my last name when we got married which suited me just fine. But her family wanted her to at least hyphenate it. She is getting ready to graduate law school and her family wanted her maiden name on her JD but she wanted her married name on it.

It was a point of contention for a bit but in the end she and I were on the same page and family had to butt the F out! If we are committing to one vagina for the rest of our lives the least you can do is take our last name.

How weird would it be if you were to marry someone with an equally "dopey" last name?
