I am 4 days into it.....and I truely believe there is something specail here. I mean, for the last few years, I;ve had a yearning to do something....to find something...to fill a void.
After the first 4 days of this 40 day book, I have come to believe that this concept is creabile.
We live our lives....work our jobs, raise our kids....spend our money, watch TV, do housewrok and yard work....go on vacations....spend time with our friends.....day in and day out.
But what are we really doing?...just living? Theres got to be more to this life.....
I believe we are here for a purpose....God had a purpose in mind for us, we just need to find it. But how?
After the first few days reading, plus my yearning to do more in this world....I believe I was put here to help people. I've done alot of thought about how I feel about people. And I determined that I have a deep disire to help children. Children that are abused or come from single families, or low income families. Children that have not had the chance to be a kid. I wanna show them that life can be fullfilling.
This book is going to help me in ways I cant explain right now......I encourage others who feel as I do about "doing something in this world" to read this book.....
if anything it can make you think about where you are in life.....and if it gets you to do something bigger, then we ALL benefit.

I've heard that it's a fantastic book. I'm not sure if Mrs. Moose has it, but if she doesn't I know it's on her list. People do need to realize that there is a purpose for why they are here. They may not want to confess that God has everything to do with why they're here, but without direction there will always be a void.

see if there is a Big Brothers Big Sisters chapter in your town, that's a great way to pal with a school-age kid needing a role model.
have not read that book, but I've heard it recommended by several people. Mostly, it's hard for me to read those kinds of books because nothing connects ... however, I did stumble across some writings on a website about Thomas Merton, a Catholic convert turned Trappist monk, and he's struck a chord in me. Somewhere, I've got his New Seeds of Contemplation that a friend loaned me, I need to read it.
Another book I discovered is one of collected stories about Mother Teresa, the nun who devoted her life to serving the poor and ill in Calcutta. That one brings tears to my eyes because you can see her love of God in action when she shares her love with people. a lot of her personal "theology" is very simple, very basic, but it makes so much sense.

thanks, TMW – the quote just hit home when I read (and reread!) the part about surrendering self to love and grace. Sometimes it can be so darn easy to give into self-doubt or whatever it is that scares you that it's hard to see the hope of a situation when we focus on the negative ...

yeah, there's a lot of good stuff out there to volunteer your help: BB/BS, Parents Anonymous, tutoring kids who've got learning problems, acting as a special advocate for them in legal cases, etc. The really neat thing about working with kids is that you know somehow, somewhere, your gift will have made a difference ...

That's really wonderful!! I am trying to find my passion of my next career. Not quite sure what it is yet, but I do know we're all put on this earth for reasons, to help others...Just a blessing if one can make a career of it.
I'll have to look for that book, I'd like to read it. Another book that I've heard mixed views about is Your Best Life Now by Pastor Joel Osteen. Has anyone read that one?
All I can say is what an amazing book. It has truely helped me understand my faith. It has brought it into a place I can really relate too. Alot of my stereotypes of what it means to be christain are being redefined. To follow christ is a personal journey, BUT we must also use fellowship as much as we can.
One thing it talks about is being tolerant. That we should not strive for uniformity, but the we can strive for unity. Christ loves everyone. And everyone has there own way. You should not be critical of how others show thier faith. That has really shined a light on how I view other believers. We all have our own gifts, and God loves all of us regradless. NO ONE is holier than thou.....
They're is a quote in the bible that relates to that, not sure which chapter. but it says "Remove the log in your own eye, before you worry about how to get the speck out of my eye".
It also had a great chapter on how to rekindle failed fellowship (friendship). You must put aside all of your pride. God hates pride, it hinders you from recieving his help. Admit your own faults and listen to others with a keen ear....hear what they feel, not what they say. When you speak, speak with words of feeling and love, do not criticize.
Again, this book has been amazing....(for me at least), but I believe in God. So, if you are a believer, I highly recommend reading this.
