[color=green]My boyfriend and I dated for about four months and a week before Valentine's day he broke up with me.

A few days prior I told him how much I really loved him. He said that he didn't think that he could give me that in return. He then said that he wanted to just be friends, but when I told him that I couldn't do that he said that he went weak in the knees. We then agreed to be just friends.

He was fine a day after that and then he started getting real distant then, but now he always returns my e-mails and work out at the ymca together acting like we always did together. I don't understand because we had some minor problems in the relationship, but we always had fun together and did stuff.

Whenever we were alone together he was always so romantic. It all started after we had a baby shower for his sister. I made a joke about something, and it worried his mother. Well, it wasn't but 2 days later he started acting real distant, he stopped calling as much, and we were not doing anything on the weekends together.

We just got a new car last weekend and he was next door at his sister's that night and he wondered who's car it was, also a few weeks prior to that he asked if this one guy at school (who was always trying to go out with me) was still bothering me.

I mean....come on? I don't understand, because when you break up it's suppose to be over. With us it isn't. He also talked to my mom the night we broke up and said that his friends advised him not to do it and to work this out. His mom said to break up with me, and he said that he shouldn't have listened to his mother.

He never goes out with his friends at night or on the weekends and I know he's had a horrible history with his family. I was the first girl he dated past 1 week and the rest thought that he was messed up. I want to hang in there for him...

I don't think I like his mother. If you made an insensitve joke, big deal. Not everybody will get your humor, that doesn't make it a bad joke though.

Why don't you find a guy that doesn't listen to Mother regarding his heart? Watch Psycho a few times this weekend, and you might just get over it sooner. Then if he comes back, great. If not... remember Psycho.

Mom's should be supportive and kind and loving. She could have given you the benefit of the doubt.

Neonink is right. Your ex doesn't sound like too bad of a guy, but if you tried to date him again, you would have to deal with his unpleasant mother.

You folks are making HUGE assumptions. You don't know that the joke was a major cause in the mother's decision, or, for that matter, in the guy's decision. From this, I read that the guy has never been fully invested in the relationship and when she told him she loved him, he backed off. I suspect he seemed very confused about all this to mom, who advised him to not go on with her since he seemed so confused.

The joke was during a baby shower about dirty diapers and condoms and my mom jokingly said "maybe we should keep them apart during valentine's day" and his mom said "yeah maybe so" with this horrified look on her face. Later that week things started changing. I took some gifts that he gave me back to him and he gave them back to me, but the only thing that he kept out of all of the stuff was a diary (that I had written a bunch of good stuff about him) and a picture of us together. We see each other a lot at the ymca and he always acts like he did when we were together, but when he has to leave he gets real quiet. He is the only child out of his brothers and sisters that has gone to college and try to do things, and has a very dominating mother. His sister has even told me that. Things are getting better and I know it's going to be alright.
