Drugs like Lexapro take weeks to become effective. Older drugs typically took 6-8 weeks, but the third generation drugs like Lexapro can take as little as 2 weeks.
As for what does the drug do, the best source for that information is the Physician's Desk Reference. It's better than your doctor or the pharmacist because it is THE bible for every drug on the market, done by the manufacturer of the drug. It's updated yearly and will have the latest information on the drug you're taking. Almost every public library, and certainly every pharmacy & doctor's office has one (Or had better). You'll learn about all the possible side effects, how the drug works (If the manufacturer knows), and potential complications.
Go to a library, photocopy the pages out of the book, and if you have any questions about what's written go talk to your doctor. That's THE BEST WAY to learn and know about the medication you're taking.
As for it's effectiveness, only time will tell. Nearly all of the drugs used to treat mental illnesses and behavor disorders work for some people and not for others, and the only way to find out is to try them. Stick with the dosage your doctor prescribed, and report ANYTHING that may be happening, good or bad. Also make sure you keep a log of how you feel so you can get a sense if the drug is working or not.
It's a lot of work, but it's the best way to see if the drug's working and if there are side effects you can't live/deal with.
Good luck.
