Pick an amount of money that you want to spend, then do what everyone tells guys to do when they want to buy something for their girlfriend: watch and listen. The best gifts aren't expensive, they're the ones that are well thought out.
For example: A (now ex) girlfriend of mine is big into collecting Hello Kitty items, and is a big fan of asian food. So when I was out of town I stopped in a shop and bought Hello Kitty chopsticks. Very inexpensive, but also a gift she fell in love with because of the thought that went behind it.
Watch what your friend does, listen to what he says, and see what he has. It'll give you clues to what he would find special. I know that if I had a girlfriend and she bought me either a Lego toy or glass figurine it would mean a lot more to me than something 10x as expensive.
I know, I don't recommend any particular thing. But that's the hard part: good and special gifts are tailored to the individual and can't easily be picked by third parties.
i'm a guy. trust me we are very simple to shop for. Any guy would be happy with tools. If by some chance her has too much or he dont like tools then a nice t-shirt will do fine......something even better is PORN hahaha...but really buy him something that looks cool. he'll love it ...

Fly is right! Around birthdays and Christmas...all the guys on base are always hoping for TOOLS.
I think what all men have accrued in their tool box....is similar to how most women feel over the jewelry they accrue in their jewelry box. You can never get enough....and a duplicate doesn't matter.
I wish it where that easy but this guy doesn't have much use for tools, he's young and doesn't own his own home yet so....I was thinking more along the lines of something special that would remind him of me.
well then that makes it a little more complecated. best thing I could tell you is a kneckless, watch, braclet you know something that he will keep for a long time.
I know he has a shoe box full of pic's from his past which he holds close to him so I was thinking I could get him one of those cute antique looking boxes that you store stuff in....maybe have it engraved and include a pic of me too....

if he is just a friend, and would like more - a gift so personal and sentimental may not be the thing.
i think women sometimes lead men on without knowing it; i certainly have. if i were the guy in question i would think your present slightly negated your 'just friends' position. at the least it might give the guy false hope.
anyway, just a thought.
here are some other ideas:
*tickets to sports event, movie, or play <depending on what he likes>
*CD collection - all his favourite songs burnt together
*porn
*gift certificate for his favourite pub or diner
*gift certificate for a cool sports thing - like parasailing, parachuting, or even just a flying lesson
*this is going to sound strange - but if he is the vain type - gift certificate for a haircut and a shave - every guy i know loves having a women at a salong shave them and shampoo them - it's close without being personal.
Hm? A photo album is personal but porn not? Hmmmm. Guess I better revise my gift list

How about either writing or sharing a published poem that reaffirms and possibly redefines your relationship? Or just write a note expressing how and why your relationship is special. Remember, this can be done without redefining your relationship in non-platonic terms.
I think that giving something of sentimental value will endure and be remembered with fondness.
