ex-teacher?

Friends say my ex music teacher likes me. I've always gotten this vibe around him. He'd invite me to gigs saying that other students would be there, but they would never show up. Then the one time I didn't go, he said they did show up. At one of these gigs he said he'd come sit with me and talk during his break....but I decided to bring a friend with me, and when he saw her, he felt too intimidated to come sit with me and sat with someone else instead. One of the guys he sat with made a comment that I was cute...and my teacher replied with, "Hey don't say that about her, she's my student.." During this gig he made eye contact with me the whole time while he was playing, and kept mischeviously/flirtatiously smiling at me. I didn't know what to think.
He recently called me and we talked for half an hour, which is a lot longer than usual...and he's invited to take me to a jazz club to watch *his* music teacher perform. He mentioned that he was going to take another student instead, but he never finished his sentence. Friends say he just said this so it wouldn't sound like he was asking me for a date.

For the past month I've been an on/off private student of his, but out of the 4 weeks he's only showed up for one lesson....even though I go out of my way to arrange lessons with him. Almost like he won't commit to being my teacher anymore.

He also talks to me about his other students and which ones he likes/can't stand, and which ones he's thinking of getting rid of. He asks for my opinion sometimes. And on a few occasions he's mentioned me to his sax teacher, his friends, and his otehr students.

What's up with this? He's technicaly no longer my teacher, though he still refers to me as his student. I'm 19, and he's around 27. He might just be being friendly. Just wanting some opinions!

Sounds pretty creepy to me. Here's what I'd do if I were you. First, I'd completely stop taking lessons from this guy, at the very least, because he's shown himself unreliable in keeping appointments (no matter why). Secondly, I think it's in very poor taste of him to be trash talking other students to you. Thirdly, yes, it does sound as if he's infatuated with you, but I fear because of your prior teacher-student relationship, the power dynamic of any other type of (romantic) relationship would be seriously inbalanced. Stay away from this one!

Yeah. What really makes me wonder is, why does he want to bring a student to this Christmas jazz gig? Why doesn't he bring one of his friends instead - someone who's his age.
