Hot Chick Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Is it unethical for a lawyer to date a client? I know Charlotte did it with her divorce lawyer Harry on Sex and the City....just wondering.....or do you have to wait until the case is settled?
OldOnTheInside Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 Is it unethical for a lawyer to date a client? I know Charlotte did it with her divorce lawyer Harry on Sex and the City....just wondering.....or do you have to wait until the case is settled? Sex and the City? Urgh... Anyway, a relationship between a lawyer and a client can hurt both the case and the lawyer's career. So yeah, it would be best to wait. Btw, what are you looking for from this guy? Presuming that this isn't a hypothetical. I know a lot of lawyers. Most of them aren't serious dating material. I suppose if you enjoy getting lots of jewelery, he may be your type. But maybe he is less sleazy than the guys I know.
Author Hot Chick Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 Well this guy supports a lot of cases for unions, and they don't make that much, from what I understand. I haven't figured out if he is single yet, though. He doesn't wear a wedding ring. I am not a gold digger, lol, but he is pretty cute, intelligent, and interesting.
Star Gazer Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 No, it's unethical for an attorney to engage in a romantic relationship with his/her client unless they were already engaged in such a relationship when the attorney-client relationship began.
one goal Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 No, no, and hell NO! It's not professional. More so than when I asked my teacher out and hitted on her.
Author Hot Chick Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 OK, thanks. He is very professional and I don't think he would do that with a client unless the case was over, since it is clearly not ethical and not legal.

If you ever find yourself in a position where your attorney is hitting on you, find another attorney stat. That's not someone you want representing your best interests.

Author Hot Chick Posted July 14, 2011 Author Posted July 14, 2011 Casey Anthony is that you? Wow, lol. Was there speculation of that with her and her lawyer? That whole thing was so creepy to watch.
carhill Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 With the ethics question answered, do you really want to be represented by someone you're hot for? I mean, for example, if he brings a settlement offer to you, will your loins write checks your mind had no intention of agreeing to? I mention this due to the verbiage you used - 'or do you have to wait until the case is settled?' If this is on your mind, and there's any way to get transferred to alternate counsel, that might be a good plan. Neutral legal environment and this guy becomes jump-able. Win-win

Win-win You are very perceptive. I want to stick with him because he is very good and he was hired by my union. I don't want alternate counsel because of his history with my case. I know there are other lawyers in his firm who are just as qualified, but I really want to stick with him (not because of an attraction or anything.) He is unaware of an attraction by myself I am sure, and it really has no bearing on my case. It would not affect a settlement, and I am pretty set on not going that route. That's all I am going to say without giving anymore details.
leon88 Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 I think there is nothing wrong with that as long as you are fine with that =). But you need to understand the lawyer's intention before proceeding further.
