want to make friends

hey,

i'm a student at a small local college not far from my town..
i live there on campus.. and i have classes 3-4 days a week or so..
i live and study there with my twin brother.. me and him have always been together.. and we both have the same mutual friends..

we started studying here in october '02.. and we haven't really made any friends on campus or in class even.. well, besides the regular hellos and small talk.. nothing outside the classroom..

i suppose the reason for this is that everyone there are a few years older than us.. and we just don't find anything in common with them...

all we do now is go to class, go back to the dorm, and study some more and just stay there all day..
i don't want to be bored to death for the remaining 3 years that i have here...

the reason i'm posting this is that there was a big party on campus.. and we went, but we didnt see anyone we could relate to.. and everyone else were getting along well there.. so we just left..

is there any good (subtle, perhaps) way to improve/make new friendships without feeling or looking desperate, this late in the year?
