What to expect?

Hello,

Well, my mother finally made the call to Al-Anon, and found out where some meetings in her area were being held.

I offered to go with her as support and she took me up on that. I think she is pretty nervous, so I was wondering if there is anyone here who has been to Al Anon, and if so, what are some things we might expect to go on there?

all depends on if it's a close door meeting,or open meeting. open door meeting are kinda laid back not into much details.close door meetings are REAL interesting.you would not believe what some people will do for booze. glad to see she's tring aa. but remember 90 in 90(90 meetings in 90 days). i wish her luck

Al-Anon is generally for family and friends of alcoholics. Some recovering alcoholics that I know, have started there and eventually went to AA meetings. No two meetings are exactly alike, really. Most open meetings in Al-Anon will usually start out with a moment of silence followed by the serenity prayer. Then there might be some short readings from conference approved literature like "Just for Today" and then the group reads the 12 steps & 12 traditions. For large groups, an experienced member is usually asked to share their experience, strength, and hope for 10-15 min's. For smaller groups, someone is either randomly picked or the chairperson will ask for anyone with "burning desires" to speak.

AA meetings are a whole different story...
