Al-Anon is generally for family and friends of alcoholics. Some recovering alcoholics that I know, have started there and
eventually went to AA meetings. No two meetings are exactly alike, really. Most open meetings in Al-Anon will usually start out with a moment of silence followed by the serenity prayer. Then there might be some short readings from conference approved literature like "Just for Today" and then the group reads the 12 steps & 12 traditions. For large groups, an experienced member is usually asked to share their experience, strength, and hope for 10-15 min's. For smaller groups, someone is either randomly picked or the chairperson will ask for anyone with "burning desires" to speak.
AA meetings are a whole different story...
