Professional appearance and advancement

I've found myself between a rock and a hard place and I seek advice.

I've been working in the professional world for close to 10 years now and always have maintained both a professional attitude and appearance. As an expression of who I am, I recently got my ears peirced. My boss said nothing about it, as he doesn't care. He is the type that performance speaks over appearance.. with in reason. Well I have been recieving, ALOT of slack from the president of the company on my new additions. His last talk consisted of "if you want to suceed anywhere in this company, your going too looking and dressing how you do". He has even gone as far as blaming some of the co-workers as being "bad influences". Now I have tattoos, which are not visible. Our company dress code is casual. I wear nice jeans or slacks and depending on the day a classy t-shirt, polo or button down shirt.

I also want to add, that I live in Utah... for those that dont know, a majority of the corporate world is Mormon/LDS.

In your opinion, do you feel earings take away from ones professionalism? Do you think they would hinder me from making career advancements with another company?

just curious...

Question up to you...

*Personally* some earrings look good on a guy , such as a stud diamond , or small gold earring....

* But * in the workplace some of the older professionals might look down on it.

Where I work guys are allowed to wear earrings ~( amazing )~ as we have a strict dress code.

Can you leave them off just for work and wear them after you get off, ( ? ) if this job is very important and the Prez is not liking earrings on a man ?

You always dress for the job you WANT, not the one you HAVE.

Given that the President of the company has commented on your appearance, I can only assume that you don't work in a creative industry where freedom of expression is highly valued. Therefore, if you have any designs on moving upward within the company, I strongly recommend you ditch the earrings, at least during working hours.

Ditto.

And I'm skeptical there is such a thing as a classy t-shirt.

Take a look at how the people dress in the positions you aspire to, and dress that way at work. Express yourself off-hours.

Nice quote SG.. I'm gonna remember that one ... and sooo true..

Michris2.. I'm going to go with the above posters and say you need to ditch them during work hours..
While it may not be fair it is really a small concession to give to move up the ladder.

How conservative is your industry?

In mine, earrings for men are frowned upon, regardless of position. For clerical positions, the expectation is that men wear button down shirts, ties, dress pants and dress shoes. Khakis and polos are considered casual Friday attire. This same dress code, is expected of the technical staff, as well.

For any of the professionals, it's primarily suits, unless it's Friday or if they're taking their clients golfing.
