I don't want to sound too eager

Posted about this new guy earlier but I have another question. A little history- known him for about 4 months through mutual friends at the gym. Never a real conversation, just quick hellos. Well just last weekend we hung out for the 1st time, I invited him over for the game, saw it with some friends. It went well and he came over again the next night. During the week he wasn't feeling that great and told me to give him a call, maybe we can do something. I suggested dinner and he said that sounded good. Called him later that night and he had a change of heart, saying he was just going to stay home because he was feeling worse. Well I haven't asked him to do anything since then because he turned me down and I figured if he wanted to see me he would make a real date. But just this past weekend he invited me to his brother's. I still want to go out on a real date with this guy. I know it's still soon, as we just started hanging out not even a week and a half ago. But I don't know if I should ask again, or should I wait until he asks? I don't want to get rejected again, and feel like if I asked him, I would seem too eager for a real date. Should I still try again? If so, how should I ask without sounding desperate? Or should I just forget it and see if he ever asks?
