How many have trouble sleeping? I was physically exhausted and just couldn't rest well at all. I tossed and turned all night. Today I am sleepy and yawning and feel as if I only slept a few minutes. I went to bed early but just didn't rest at all. Then my friend calls and tells me that her daddy passed away. This is weird almost like my body knew something was up. I could lay down and take a nap. I was going to go to her house but I thought I would wait till they take care of all the arrangements. She said that they wouldn't be there so for me just wait after I called. He was like a second dad to me cause I grew up with him. I lost my dad at 10 from emphyesema and asthma. She said he was having some strong chest pains Saturday night but he wouldn't go to the dr. She thinks because he died in his sleep it was a heart attack.

How often do you get insomnia? Or was this a one time thing?
My condolences on the loss of your friend's father. Sometimes those that are not family members can become as close as family members.
As for the insomnia...yes, I have had it on occasion. Years ago I would get it when my wife and I had an agreement. I didn't realize that this was the cause. Anyhow, I bought a book about...insomnia. It was not very interesting, but I thought if I could understand it better, maybe I could overcome insomnia. Well, I feel asleep reading the book. So, for that period of time, I would pull out that book when I could not sleep. Every time I feel asleep. What happened? My body felt sleepy when the book was read. It became a trigger of relaxation. If you can discover a "trigger" for relaxation, then you can begin that routine before bedtime.
Now I take one tylenol PM if I feel like I am not going to sleep. This happens in spurts...sometimes a few days in a row...sometimes not for a few weeks or months.
My suggestion is to determine the cause(s) behind the insomnia. When you know what it is, you can go about preventing the result...or you can take a sleeping pill on those nights. The causes are many....emotional distress, stress, physical, illness, or other reasons. Analyze your situation, and you may find it is something simple.
As for premonition, I had a similar thing happen almost exactly four years ago. I had an anxiety attack on a Sunday morning. It was the morning after the shuttle crash in 2003. I could not figure out why this would cause anxiety in me. The next day we heard the news that my friend's child died and my wife's father had a heart attack. Coincidence...probably, but it made me think.

I do. It's bad for me. Yesterday I was up at four, today I was up at three. I can get to sleep most night but I do not stay asleep.
You can see your doctor about it. There are lots of options out there if it's chronic, like mine. There are lots of new meds that are not addictive like in the past that can help you get a good nites sleep.
Not sleeping well for several nights in a row can make you more prone to accidents and is just not good for your body. If it continues or happens more often see your dr.
I find exercise helps and cutting back on alcohol. But if you don't drink sometimes a glass of wine can help you feel sleepy.
The best thing my doctor told me was if you are in bed and can't sleep get up. Go read a book. Than try again. She said it can cause you more stress to stay in bed and try sleeping when you can't.
yoga & meditation helped me as well as taking melatonan. When it was really bad I did take sleeping pills for a brief period. They really helped because at that point it had been months of not sleeping well and I just needed rest.
Thanks for your replies. It doesn't happen often at all. Just on occassion when my mind is racing and thinking. I did jury duty and we found the man not guilty when I know he was. It was 9 that thought he wasn't guilty and the other 3 did. We couldn't prove beyond a shadow of a doubt therefore we had to say not guilty too! It has been weighing on my mind alot. He broke this guy's jaw and it had to have screws and etc. But we couldn't prove he used excessive force. If we could have had the plantiff's physical exam then we could have determined it. I feel for the family and all. I think it was also my mind telling me something wasn't right. The night my mom's sister died we knew she was sick I couldn't rest either. I did lay down and nap alittle don't feel as tired as I did. I usually do read before I go to bed but fell asleep on the couch and woke up and it was late so I just went to bed.
I was diagnosed with insomnia a year ago... I can't fall asleep until after 2 basically every day, usually I am up until 4ish and there have been nights (once every other week or so) that I just don't fall asleep. I have seen doctors for it a few times and the best thing they have come up with is taking muscle relaxers at night and if I need to get to sleep early taking Tylenol PM. I tried sleeping pills (Ambien and something else) but they lasted too long and I was really groggy until the next afternoon. I think for me it is stress induced, I notice it gets worse when I have big exams coming up or when something else stresses me out.
I have insomnia all the time. Either that, or I just don't require very much sleep. 2am to 3am is my usual bedtime, I wake up at least once, sometimes twice, & am out of bed by 9am. I've learned to live with it. Not only have I learned to live with it I've actually come to the conclusion that sleep is a supreme waste of time! I seem to have been vindicated in that conclusion - I once read a study which found that people who sleep a lot have shorter lives (I wish I could find the reference, but I can't - probably because I'm too tired).
The temporary insomnia you describe is not unusual.

Reason: being tired makes me make mistakes

Your insomnia sounds like situational insomnia. You get insomnia when you have something on your mind. That has usually been my case as well. For me, OTC sleeping pills have worked well. However, you cannot use them on a regular basis. Me...I can use jusy one tylenol PM instead of the two recommended dosage. Why tylenol PM? Because it is much cheaper than the sleeping pill version without the pain med.
I have trouble with insomnia myself. Most of the time I'm ok but when I find myself in a cycle of not being able to sleep, I normally take something that will knock me out.
Not saying that choice is right (it's not) but sometimes I don't know what to do and it's a quick fix. The problem with that is once I take something, it's still in my system that causes me to remain tired so I then go no to something that will wake me up.
Now I do think that a lot of this is me not being able to relax. My mind is always doing something. But it's something that I live with. Even right now I could fall asleep and it's only 9:11 p.m. here.
I think everyone experiences insomnia sometime in their life.

I think you found your answer as to WHY you might have had insomnia.
I'm sure being on jury duty back and forth can be exhausting as it is, especially depending on what kind of case it is. And it sounds like you had this case on your mind, especialy if you feel it should have been a different verdict.
If you find you are having insomnia alot though, you might want to talk with your doctor, and also try to pin point if there are any issues unresolved that might be weighing on your mind, that could be causing you to not rest well.

That was exactly what I was thinking, and . . .

tylenol PM.
. . . was what I was going to suggest you take for common insomnia like this.
Personally, I've had insomnia since a very long time ago.
Every night I go to sleep any time from 3-5 AM and wake up around 7-9AM. At most, I will get 6 hours of sleep every night, and at least, zero.
There are some nights when I don't sleep at all, and this happens usually once a week or every other week. I've also gone days, like 3, without any sleep--about twice.
But man, does that make me feel like sh*t later on in the week.
Usually, though, I'll go to sleep at 3 AM and wake up at 7 AM. Eh.
Do you think your insomia is temporary? Most likely it could be due to the stress and anxiety.
I've been battleing insomia for 3 years now and it's to the point that when I wake up in the middle of the night I am angry, frustrated and have cried over it. It is ususally do to some stress or anxiety.
For me the best two things that work are excercising and actually making more time for sleep.
I'ved tried Tylenol PM and after a while your body gets used to it and then it won't work. That can also happen with Ambien. What I've learned with any drug or over the counter stuff is to take it sparingly....not every day.
I might take Melatonin once in a while too. And tea with honey. Actually there was a recent study on that.
But overall excercise and going to bed earlier than normal..so your body can relax. And if you have to....ear plugs or eye pads.
Oh yes I know whats its like to not sleep ive gone days and I litteraly mean days with out sleep untill you finaly pass out. I have had this prob for years and years now been on prob every sleeping pill there is. Ambein for 3 years or so watch out with that one its kinda addictive. Tryed Lunestia dident work that great and gave me a head ake the next day. Nyquils not bad but you cant use it for extended peroids of time because it will give you nasty nose bleeds. Now adays I just go with a over the counter one like sominex. But better to get the gel tabs because I find the other kind can make you supper groggey the next day. Also like one of the other posters said try and find a calming routine. Maybe have a cup of tea at night before bed I found thats kinda nice. But anything that can help you relax your mind pretty much. And then if you do get into a good habbit with normal sleep stick with it. Your body has a internal clock and belive me if you mess it up it can take years to set it right again im still trying..
