Did I do the right thing?

My ex broke up with me about 8 months ago and it was one of the hardest things I have ever been through. I just found out recently that after she left me she started seeing someone else the very next day (we dated for a year). I called her many times, and i always got the cussing out speech about leaving her alone. The new bf even called me to tell me to stop calling.

So fast forward to now. It took me a while, but I've stopped calling like she asked. But then she starts calling me about every 2 weeks to see how I am doing. I take about 10 steps back every time she does that. So apparently shes engaged now, but she still calls to tell me how much she misses me and that she misses our moments of passion, yada yada...

I met someone new, someone I really like a lot. problem is I'm still in love with my ex gf. She emailed me yesterday to say whats up, but I told her to please stop contacting me. She responded back very apolagitic and i think i might have hurt her feelings. I feel so bad for that but what else could I have done? I want to move on with my life. I like this new girl, but she has no idea about my ex or my feelings for her. Is it possible for me to have a friendship with my ex? I care for her deeply and i know she can use a good friend at times.
