i think you should go to a forum that is specifically for those who self harm and also support for their friends/family.
You need to talk to people who actually know properly about this condition. It is a serious problem, and general speculation from people who dont know alot about it isnt going to help you.
I hope you find some answers and can help your friend. Its really awful and I know how it feels to see a friend damage themselves and not be able to help. My situation was with drugs though, not self harm.
