How to not get invested?

I am seeing a trend. Every time I start dating, my life gets thrown in a mess. I cannot concentrate, my work lags and everything becomes a struggle. Yet to this date, no relationship has ever worked out past a month or more and I'm always left to pick up the pieces and get myself sorted.

Things are improving lately as I stop myself from letting this happen. But I can't but help feel if the off chance this ever happens again, how do I not let myself get too invested into everything? Funny thing is after this last break up, I feel myself changing. I no longer stay friends with girls I like unless in exceptional circumstances. I've torn up my 'good guy contract' with those girls of the past.

I am less flamboyant - still approachable enough but I'm not sure. I can't pick it but I know it feels as if I've said good bye to my nice guy ego. So I guess I am asking, how do I build up this shell or defense where I've always worn my heart on my sleeve in the past?

You say that is a trend? So it's something that has happened recently, or, has it always been this way?

Do you find not being able to focus on work, etc., with other things (not just relationships)?
