She's right
muscle makes you look lean, and more toned. I spoke to a friend today who told me about the exercise that the "Friends" stars used to be lean and leggy.
Its something akin to Yoga, but I can't remember the exact name of it.
Eventually, your muscle will start burning your fat for energy. This, however, takes time.
Also, the reasons that your muscles increase in size is because whenever you work out, and strain them terribly, you tear them. Then, muscle-scar tissue fills in the tears, increasing the size of the muscle.
Therefore, if you want to be lean, then don't do lifting. Lifting will build bulky muscle tissue and make you look like a foot ball player. This actually happened to a female friend of mine in college.
