"If my dog doesn't like you...launch!"

Ever seen dating profiles where if someone mentions they have a dog, and if "My dog doesn't like you, then you get the boot!"

Is this REALLY a good litmus test to see if this is a dealbreaker or not? Does it depend on the breed? Like if it's a Black or Golden Lab, they are typically friendly with everyone, but if it's a dog breed with a typical unfavorable temperament, I dunno, like an ankle biting Chihuahua that nips at ANYONE's heels....isn't there kind of an inaccurate assessment there?

If I had bacon my pocket, there goes her "sh**t" test? lol

i think it just means the owner is placing a significant emphasis on the pet in their life and they are telling you that through their profile. i don't think you're supposed to take the statement literally, but more of a 'i love dogs and you should love dogs too.'

i have three dogs and they have always reacted differently to dates, and yes... they do know when a person doesn't like them, and they tend to stay away from that person. some 'attack' more and some just stay away from certain people. i've had many male dates who try and fake affection towards an animal, and they can for a short while, but the dog and owner can normally tell if it's legit. much harder than you think to find a date truly compassionate about pets:)

I like dogs a lot. Not much of a cat person though. I have a male single friend that complained of his date's Chihuahua following him around an inch close his feet, yappin and nippin at him.

Some owners can't seem to control their pets. That's the part that's a dealbreaker for me.

I don't think they're going to literally judge you based on their dog's reaction. As a fellow animal lover I read that more as an indication that they treat their pets as family and expect potential dates to appreciate and respect that.

Surprisingly there are people in this world who feel that they're entitled to treating or speaking of their date/bf/gf's dog or cat poorly just because they just don't like that animal. You don't have to like them, but it's like disrespecting someone's child or best friend, and yes that would absolutely be a deal breaker to most pet owners.

During my dating years, my dogs were a better judge of character than I was. I learned to trust them. I had one dog outright snarl at a guy.

I told my husband the same thing, knowing full well, before he met them, that they would approve. And they did. In turn, I learned to love cats.

Pet lovers are best with other pet lovers.

If they don't get on with my dogs its a no brainer... It really is that simple.

And bacon doesn't work with mine. They do not take food from people they don't like anyway but bacon makes two of them vomit and gives one the runs... The fourth is fine but she just doesn't really like it that much...

OP, I would pay some attention to what they're saying on this one.

Animals tend to be a better judge of character than humans. Pets I have had have been exceptional at this and right every time since I was a 3 year old. Young children too are far better at this than adults are though they can't verbalise it

Animals and small children tend to take an instant liking to me so if I am out with a guy I am dating and meet either I will also pay attention to how they behave with the guy too as I currently have no pets.

I am a cat person, but did wind up with a dog once...

She was of no value assessing potential gfs, she liked them all ..lol.., but was quite useful assessing people who stopped to give me rides when I was hitch hiking. I absolutely relied on her judgment here and turned down a number of rides because of it.

Replace dog with parrot for me - honestly if someone comes home and he doesn't like them they won't be staying long! He has the loudest squawk ever, it drives them right out!

Dogs can't judge character. They sense people's emotions and react to that. They can't tell if someone is a good person or a bad person, all they can tell is what a person is feeling in the moment. If someone is uncomfortable, nervous or fearful the dog will react poorly to that. Now that person might just have a problem with anxiety, or nerves or have a sight fear of dogs but otherwise be the greatest person ever. In contrast another person might be confident, relaxed and self assured. The dog is going to like that person even if the guy has dead bodies in the trunk of his car.

I have a dog. I love my dog and I'm a dog person but no, I don't judge people based on my dog's feelings.

You know, it could be literal or it could just be saying "must like dogs." I had one dog that I trusted so much and would mind me, but if she overrode me, and insisted on putting the bead on someone and growling, she was usually right. There was one time I don't think she was right, but it was borderline. He was a huge guy, a friend, and the first time I saw him he wasn't being very nice to dog he'd inherited. But then he sort of learned to like animals better. He had a very deep voice and I think that really scared her. So she was only half right there, but I believe she possibly kept me from being gang-raped by a trio of hillbillies once by sitting at my feet and glaring and growling at them.

Other dogs I've had, I wouldn't put that much faith in, and maybe my dog is just neurotic or untrained, but if anybody just didn't like dogs, I see them as clearly defective, because there is no other creature on earth more friendly or protective toward humans than dogs -- and if you can't get along with dogs in general, you can't get alone with anybody worth knowing.

Just a bit off topic but my new date was rubbing one of my dogs tummies the other night. He was really pleased and commented that Y obviously likes him... I had to point out it wasn't Y he was stroking but her mother M who is a total tart when it comes to belly rubs... :lmao:

Sorry just made me laugh...!

I think we dog owners all say it but in different ways. This woman was a bit 'in your face' with it in her profile, I tend to use an informative tone and I say something like 'I am a dog owner and I take my role seriously'. I also talk about this in a first conversation. I told men I have a dog waiting for me at home so after work I don't have the type of freedom to run around town without notice. Etc.

I trust my dog's judgment of people. If my dog brings you his toys it's because he gets a good vibe out of you. If he brings you his bone he recognizes you as the dominant. If he lays at your feet it's that he accepted you in our pack.

I have been dating someone for 2 months and my 9 yo dog had to adapt. I am lucky the man I am dating is an animal lover and has patience. My dog would not let him sleep in my bed. My dog would jump on the bed in the middle of the night and lay on top of him! (40 lbs dog). He would also go on his side of the bed, sit there and cry and cry. I'd get up several times a night to guide my dog back to his bed. Finally it stopped and we can sleep through the night. Someone that doesn't like animals would not have put up with that.

Personally, I find it kind of nice when people put things like this on their dating profiles.

I read the ones a lot that say, "I have children so you MUST love kids." I don't really like kids, don't have them and don't want them. So why would I waste my time (and theirs) trying to get to know them and possibly their children, try to bond with them, if I know in the long run our lifestyles aren't compatible and I won't want to be with them?

It's nothing personal to me, I'm sure their kids are great, I'm just not interested in having them around ME. Same goes for pet people. I am a pet person, and while I expect hiccups and maybe some time for a guy to bond with my dogs, if he doesn't like animals then yes, he's gotta go.

My dogs are established. He isn't. For every person who doesn't like my pets, there will be another who DOES. I'm not willing to give up a pet whom I've had for 10 years for a guy I've known for a short time.

The great thing about profiles is that they tell you a lot in what they do say or don't say and how they say it and regardless of whether you agree with what is said, it still provides you with the necessary info to decide if it's worth pursuing or passing by. So it's a win win in that case.

I'm not a big dog person and would be put off by that. I wouldn't take it literally, I would just assume that they love dogs, have a dog in their life and would probably be a better match with another dog lover. I therefore wouldn't message them or if they messaged me first I'd probably bring it up straight away but in a light manner.
