Why the need for alcohol?

Disillusioned

First off, I've heard all about the "beer goggles" crap, so I'm not 100% clueless, and besides, I never could get into the taste of alcohol.

Second, I recently met with a few staff members of the church I've been going to on & off for over 20 years, and they're cool with letting me use their meeting hall to host meetings for the artistic singles group I've organized (as long as I get to do the grunt work, ha ha).

But here's where the problem is: if you keep the events non-alcoholic, there are a lot more places which will book you for meetings (like potlucks in the city park), and the church staff explained that their insurance policy forbids hard liquor on their premises (understandable, who wants a bunch of rowdy drunks trashing the place?). Don't even think about bringing hooch into the local park. OTOH it seems like who ever heard of something as crazy as a singles meeting without enough alcohol for the guests to get falling-down drunk? I've been to plenty of singles events in places that serve alcohol, and all of them were boring as hell because they didn't have much of a theme, other than dancing and food for those who wanted it.

I'm thinking that maybe a theme like a poetry reading or an open-mike night would mitigate the urge for the guests to drink...
