How old are you? Based on the language you use, the melodramatics you describe and the time frames you mentioned, I get the sense that you're all relatively young (under 25). I apologize if that's incorrect.

Here's the thing: none of you are married. Everything in your life might feel like forever right now, but it isn't. The entire point of dating is to meet someone you really love. If you meet someone you think you might love than your current partner, that's a good sign that your current partner is probably not your soulmate. You should stay with your boyfriend because you love him above everyone else and couldn't bear to live your life without him, not because leaving would be hard.

And to address your original question, platonic friends are certainly possible, but this is not it. If you intend to stay faithful to your boyfriend then you need to cut contact with this guy to the greatest extent possible. If you intend to break up with your boyfriend, then you need to do it, because life is too short for missed opportunities and he deserves someone who wants to put him first without hesitation.
