"OK, now this is stupid. I can handle a world where I have to walk on eggshells around women who are terminally insecure for no particular reason no matter what their age, weight, height, hair color - you name it! But to live in a world where men are just the same, just as ridiculous? [...] No, I say! Absolutely not! Where is the silent heroism of the lonely male? Where are the Clint Eastwoods, the Steve McQueens, the Robert Mitchums of this world? Where are the men whose whole grooming regime consisted of nothing more than a **** and shave? I ask you, would Bogart give a toss about plastic surgery? Would John Wayne worry about sunscreen? Would Sean Connery think twice about a double chin? Never! I shudder to think what sort of pale, insipid existence we have to look forward to if we enter into that singular, unfortunately female state of mind that depends wholly on the approval of others before we can ever begin to see ourselves." - Kathleen Tessaro

That's a great quote, or rant.

I think because of the major shift in society in the last century, the lines of masculinity and femininity got skewed. That's a good and bad thing. Both genders got liberated from that stereotypical image, but both genders also need to re-find themselves.

There are some under my local underpass.. Want me to introduce? :p

I ask you, would Bogart give a toss about plastic surgery?

He had plastic surgery on his lips.

Would John Wayne worry about sunscreen?
I'm sure he did since he may have developed cancer from radiation exposure.

Would Sean Connery think twice about a double chin?
Rumors say he's gotten some work done also.

Women particularly have to re-adapt their femininity in the 21st century. Men just have to adjust to it, work with it, while not losing themselves - which is why OP's quote is so great.

Bring back dodge ball!!

Yeah no kidding. I used to live with someone like that and OMG... awful. When it comes to unnecessary insecurities and all that drama and negativity and projection, men can honestly be worse than women. The guy I lived with took out his emotions on me... didn't matter if he was feeling old, or mad at himself for not going to the gym, or disappointed with his wardrobe.... he just did not know how to deal with it and would create a huge amount of tension in our house. Of course he has LOTS of other issues as well.... all the more reason to be thankful I was able to get away from him! :D

Okay, well everyone should wear sunscreen...

...but holy crap are you serious??! *Sigh* Thanks for bursting my fantasy. I'll choose to believe that it was being a celebrity that ruined these men, which is a whole other issue.

Well, Connery was never just a s**t and shave kinda guy:

But agreed, insecure guys are lame. Makes life easier for the rest of us though.

What about the days when women would cook and do laundry without saying, "don't get used to this". What happened to the days where I was allowed to pick up the check for dinner with no qualms so I can feel like a man? What happened to the days when people used to go out on first dates to an actual restaurant instead of meeting up on a Tuesday afternoon for a "pre-date" to see whether or not the other person was worth their Friday or Saturday night? What happened to dressing up for a date? What happened to talking someone on the phone instead of photocopying an email telling some to text you when they have a chance?

There has been a substantial wussification of society.

Hair colored

Tanning bed

Don't get me wrong, I like those actors' characters too. And it's much better when men's grooming, like this, appears casual at first glance.

He's getting flabby and he's super hairy....that's what I saw

Double standards...

If she's going to enable women to insecurities and over-sensitivity, she should also be enabling men to the same.

I enable neither gender to any of this. ;)

I don't think women should be insecure either...however, what caused me to post this is the whole idea that WOMEN are judged by men pretty much on their beauty and youth.

Women don't judge men in this way (for the most part) - so they need to stop acting like women about this crap.

Thats funny, because its always irritated me. Maybe because I grew up in an immigrant community, and the 20th centruy hadnt caught up there.

But I dont let people pay

And women who push has always been a turn fof for me. I get the reasoning, and especially a lot of them not wanting to be perceived as sponges.

But rather than communciate "good potential" as in she sself sufficient and or doesnt feel entitled, I always see it as she doesnt value herself/doesnt think shes worth having a man buy her dinner.

I dont want a gold digger, but I appreciate a woman who has a little entitlment in her, as in my company is worth the cost of a dinner.

Dusty -

I cook and do laundry....expect my man to help with the dishes though.

You are more than welcome to pick up the tab, it is the gentlemanly thing to do.

Pre-date? WTF

I love talking on the phone and I can write real letters...prefer not to text period.

I dress up good too.

This all make me a near extinct species? I'm old fashioned country girl and I want an old fashioned, "quality" guy.

...and then you noticed Connery and thought "What the hell is that ridiculously hot woman doing with HIM?!!?"

And then you were like "oh yeah, he's a real man, he's not insecure, he has personality" &etc.
