How did you afford it/find work/relocate?

What do you guys think of Austin versus San Fran, assuming I had the option to work in either spot? What do you think the minimum salary would have to be to live in both places without feeling like you're falling behind on expenses/bills?

I suggest San Fran for the following reasons:

More people

larger dating pool for you

potentially more money

weather

The flip side:

higher cost of living

weather

The cost of living in Houston is great but I notice that it's rising, so I'm not sure that I'd make the decision based on that. I mean, housing prices are still better than most places but Austin probably isn't that bad either. I know you're not looking to buy a house but the housing market can tell you a lot about the cost of living of a place. I think apartment rent in Houston is pretty high. I'm not sure I'd make the distinction that Sugar Land is that separate from Houston - it's just sitting there on the outskirts. It's probably a lot like The Woodlands - it's an incredibly beautiful place that's also just outside Houston but it's mostly a family community. If you decide on Houston, the Westheimer / Galleria area is excellent for singles - but the cost to live there is pretty high.

If I were able to move to any one of those places, I'd choose Austin. The climate is better - way less humidity than Houston; and I don't think the cost of living is that bad. It's a hopping town with lots of activity and young people. If you end up getting married and raising kids, you'll most likely settle where you are and that's a great place to be. I have no idea about the Asian population, but Houston and Austin are both big cities so I'm sure there's no shortage. You may want to consider Dallas or San Antonio. Still, Austin would be my choice.

San Francisco is AWESOME -- but be prepared for the cost of living. It is incredibly HIGH. And I've been told that it's cold quiet often there.

I saved for a year before I moved from the East coast. And like a lot of people here, I had roommates. If you want it badly enough, you can make it work. Be prepared to make some sacrifices though. The cost of living is high, but it's the price you pay for getting to live here! :)

I like the weather here too. It's in the 60s nearly year round.
