Apparently Oriental is also considered incorrect when assigning race to Asians nowadays, even though most people in the 50s(?) grew up with that term.

In 1980 I learned at UCLA that Asian referred to people while oriental referred to objects. So I adjusted and started using Asian just as I had dropped Negro for Black five years before. Then in the 90s I got the internet and started seeing Oriental being used for Asians again. Showing my cultural sensitivity I got into a few internet fights over the matter.

It turns out that in the UK when they say Asian they are referring to people from the India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangledesh and it is PC in the UK to call East Asians Orientals.

No..Thais and Cambodians are southeast Asians...most are ethnically and racially Malays.... they are darker than the others who are ethnically Chinese, and have broader noses....among other things...

oh yeah oops. I meant South and East Asians. I do happen to know the difference thank you :)

Maybe you've been brainwashed by seeing Asian movie stars who are selected for their Caucasian-like features or often go under the knife to achieve them. Most ordinary Asians don't have large eyes. Small noses and good shoulders (?) aren't distinctively Asian either.

Let's get to the root of this...shadowplay, what do you have against Asians, or Asian women, in particular? You seem to have a problem with men preferring and finding Asian women more attractive than their counterparts? "SEEM" being the operative word.:p

what features do you consider to be characteristically Caucasian? I don't find Zhang Ziyi to be that Caucasian looking, maybe she has somewhat lighter skin. But I don't think light skin is characteristic of only Caucasians (and on the other hand, Caucasians can have a somewhat darker skin tone in some cases).

yes, I am curious, what's Caucasian about Zhang Ziyi...btw, she looks ok...and Lucy Liu is not pretty...and don't even ask me about Lisa Ling .

I don't think Lucy Liu is pretty either...but she's the type some white guys would probably consider hot with their Asian goggles. :lmao: I better not mention Sandra Oh... :p

Zhang Ziyi -- It's hard for me to pinpoint but her features have a definite European feel. The shape of her face is less round/square than typically Asian. It's sort of heart-shaped. Her nose is thin and high. Her eyes have more eyelid showing.

Another Asian woman I find particularly beautiful is this Korean actress Song Hye Kyo.

Gong Li was really gorgeous in Raise the Red Lantern but I haven't been as wowed by her elsewhere.

Oh god, Sandra Oh!!!! wth....

I said in my post above what's European looking about her. You can see it in that photo. I always assumed she was Eurasian until I read otherwise.

She also doesn't look Chinese to me. I would have guessed Korean.

LOL!!!!! I think it is SAFE to say I know more Asians that you do...as I am 1) Asian 2) Lived and traveled all over Asia...Trust me on this...she looks like any other Asian from the far east...nothing special. Nothing European about her.

There is no way for people to tell a Japanese, Korean, Chinese from each other if they are dressed the same and especially not from a PICTURE...NO WAY...just like there is no way people can tell if one is Caucasian from Canada, Germany or the US if dressed the same way.....As an Asian person, I can usually tell if someone is Chinese, Korean and Japanese when I see them in person..and watch them act, how they dressed, etc. Easier to spot a Chinese than a Korean vis-a-vis a Japanese from each other and vice versa. That said, I am usually right when I do make the call.

Dave,

Lol. I'm assuming this post is in jest.

Well it's hard to take threads like this seriously. Whenever we get these "which breed of woman is most appealing" threads, I get this nagging sense that female attractiveness is being used as a veil for discussing whether some races are physically superior to others. But as long as it's the racial types under comparison are restricted to females, nobody need be offended.

Perhaps I'm being unfair. Maybe if I start a thread saying "hey, I totally go for black men. What do people think?" nobody would see any implicit suggestion in my comment that I find black men racially superior to white men. The reality is that there are some men who catch my eye because they look really good, and lots more who I just don't really notice. Both categories contain men of various shades/races. I guess when it comes to emotionally and romantically connecting, I tend to look for a combination of the familiar and the exotic.

I'm very glad you said that. I remember when I was travelling, a guy I was with said something about a Korean girl who had attempted to climb Ayer's Rock in a pair of high heels. I asked how he knew she was Korean as opposed to Japanese, and he laughed at me as though I'd just rocketed down from Pluto and was asking for directions.

I don't have whatever it takes to tell at a glance which region of South east Asia people are from. Just as I can't tell at a glance (without hearing them speak) whether someone is German, Danish, Dutch or Australian....unless they're dressed in a way that promotes their nationality ostentatiously. Sometimes I can get an instinct by which, as you say, I can make an accurate call, but only sometimes. I'm sure most people are the fruit of inter-regional or international love between their ancestors.

On the female beauty thing - I think some things are pretty much universal in their appeal. Symmetrical features, small waist, slim build, high cheekbones, good skin, nicely groomed to show it all off. Tends to gravitate towards capital cities in order to properly reap the benefits of being beautiful for a while. In more provincial areas, the emphasis is often on making the most of sexual charms rather than aspiring to a more elegant, model style beauty.

Men never sound so much like tourists as they do when comparing the beauty of women from different regions. As though the capitals give an accurate picture. All they tell you is that that pretty, often well-educated, relatively affluent and stylish, young women will tend to settle for a while in the places that offer the most options and opportunities, and the highest financial rewards. You get more of a sense of what the average woman looks like from the shop girls and the office clerks working in the Provincial and rural areas of a country. In very poor countries, there might be spectacular looking girls in the capitals - and lots of very unfortunate sights in the more rural parts. In more affluent countries, I think there tends to be that bit less difference between the way people look in the provinces and the way they look in the capital cities.

I think I can tell Japanese, Koreans, and Chinese apart.

At the very least, Koreans usually have the most massive jawbones (girls included).

Also, if you see an Asian smoking a cigarette, there is 90% chance that he or she is Korean .

Japanese vs. Chinese is more tricky, but i think Chinese noses tend to be somewhat flatter and more petite.

Socially inept? wow....how nice. Slam the guy for having a preference. Pathetic.

I'm sure you've seen more Asians, but I also grew up among a lot of East Asians. They don't look the same! Don't assume that just because I'm white I'm not perceptive. I've always been interested in faces, and I seem to notice facial details more than most people.

The guys are easier to differentiate for whatever reason. They seem to have more facial variety, while the softening effect of being female blurs a lot of the differences. Japanese guys often have stronger bone structure and thicker eyebrows than Chinese and Koreans. That's not to say I can always tell. There are a lot of people who are ambiguous.

That is some talent! I am Japanese and sometimes have a more difficult time telling a Japanese from a Korean and vice versa-until I see how they act/carry themselves and dress. I can't really tell from the features. Chinese for me is easier to tell.

Can you tell the nationality of the girl on my avatar?

Lol. I actually think that's pretty explicit. Would somebody really care whether anonymous posters online are OK with them just liking Asian women? It's not about alleviating guilt so much as it about an ego rush from having their preferences validated.

I am not assuming anything....except that I think it is nonsense that you can tell from pictures or that it is not difficult. Oh and of course, we Asians look different.---heck, I do not look anywhere near Sandra Oh ! LOL...that is just silly to put it out there.

Check my avatar and tell me what that girl's nationality is, will ya?

I say Japanese(ish).

Mind you, I didn't claim it is easy to tell, but there are subtle differences that can help you get it right every once in a while (and still better than a random guess).

Much like you can usually tell apart a russian from an italian etc.

I am going to put her picture on my profile, so it will bigger and tell me what features make her Japanese or Korean.

Not only that, it's a passive aggressive way of validating your preferences.

I have the same preference, but at least don't feel compelled to flaunt it in people's faces (and at the same time expect them to hug me and tell me that it's gona be okay )

I think it is easier to tell in person, even without hearing them talk ( of course, that would be a dead give away )--- it is about how they carry themselves, fashion sense...etc.etc...I found that when I was in Hungary and Czech Republic most women are not elegant...and the fashion sense ...versus the women in France. That has nothing to do with their Caucasian features, though.

Why do you think the OP was necessary FLAUNTING it? Couldn't anyone just talk about it without it being PA or "flannting"? OP has been slammed and jokes have been said and he has not responded in a negative way.

It wasn't my intention at all to discuss which race has the most attractive females. I know there are attractive women from all races and that my attraction to Asian women is just a personal preference. What I was more interested in was finding out how socially acceptable it would be to admit to this. Actually what I have found is pretty much what I would have suspected. Men and Asian women don't seem to have a problem with it. Non-Asian women and perhaps Asian men (not sure about that one) seem to have a problem with it. Since Asian women are the ones I am interested in, I guess this is not a big deal, although I know I will have to be careful what I say around my non-Asian women friends.
