Would you be offended if a friend contacted you but not their idea

I know someone who is going through a hard time. We have a mutual aquaintance who knows him better but isn't local. I would like to ask him to reach out to him. I think he could use a guy friend but is not very outgoing or the type to be vulnerable and admit it. I'm not close enough to this person to be that supportive friend myself. Changes in behavior at work, off hand comments etc that are concerning but not enough to warrant supervisor or hr intervention.

 

Can I ask the mutual friend to get in touch with him and not mention it was my idea? Would that be preserving his dignity or insulting? Since I'm not close enough to be a friend should I

not take it upon myself to do anything at all?

I don’t see anything wrong with that. My friends have done it. I’ve done it. But there’s nothing wrong reaching out yourself either.
