Secondment Opportunity

Recommended Posts

Hi.

Looking to get anyone viewpoint on this situation.

I currently have an offer to move to NYC from the UK on international secondment for 2 years. Moving to NYC the US will consider me as a new manager despite having 2 years experience as a manager. Although I will be able to go for promotion in 2020 and they have said I can be supported in that.

However I have an opportunity in the UK to help drive forward a specific specialism which could lead me to a chance of being promoted in 2019, However there is no guarantee.

This may be my last chance to do a secondment abroad before family comes into play. However, would I regret missing out on the opportunity here and potential total early promotion.

Any thoughts on what I should go for would be appreciated.

None of us are really positioned to evaluate the pros and cons of the respective career tracks, that's up to you.

But there are few more impactful experiences that living abroad and experiencing another country as a resident rather than tourist. And New York is an amazing city and well positioned for further jaunts.

For what it's worth, my vote would be to expand your horizons. Work to live, not the other way around...

What do you mean, "before family comes into play"? Do you mean, before you start to think about having a family? I would not be concerned with that. Nothing is ever certain, and you can wait if you have to. I think you should go for the NYC opportunity. When you start to have kids, it's hard to travel as much, especially for work.
