Should I assume I didn't get the job?

Recommended Posts

I went in for an interview today, I think it didn't go very well. At the end, the supervisor told me that they are interviewing a few more people and that they will make their decision. She gave me her card, and said if I have any questions, I should call her. Well, that didn't sound very promising. The line, they are interviewing more people I consider a red flag. Now, of she said, you would hear back from us by the end of the week, that's a good sign, but she didn't say that.

You are reading too much into it. In my current job they told me in the interview that they will be interviewing 5 more people. I also didn't supply refeeres and I actually asked them if I should email the referee details and they said "We will let you know if we need them". All kind of bad signs but it turns out that the hiring manager knew my former boss so he just rang him. I didn't know any of this at the time.

No way!! There are usually more than one applicant that makes it to the interview stage. You will hear by the end of the week...just like she said.

Good luck!!

I always feel though that they are interviewing 5 people to fill the quota but they already have a favorite in mind. And as long as that favorite doesn't mess up the interview badly, they will end up with the job offer.

The job I'm in now was offered to someone else, who turned it down because they got a better offer.

You never know how your luck will turn out.

This is why I work for myself now. I cant stand having to kiss up to a crappy employer just to make the cut. By the way what makes you think it didn't go too well? What did u do or not do?

I agree with the others. Once upon a time you knew an interview went well if you were offered the job on the spot. This isn't the case anymore. Most companies interview several applicants before making a decision because it is an employer's market right now. I've only had like one or two jobs hire me on the spot. But love at first sight for an employer is rare these days. Your interview sounds pretty normal. I take the "we'll call you in a week" with a grain of salt, because often times you will not hear back unless you got the job.

This almost happened to me recently. There was a well paying contract offer made to me, because the first applicant they chose didn't pass the background/drug screen. Only they were a few days too late...I had just started another job and so I turned it down because my current job is permanent and the other position was contract.

On my current job, they told me I'd hear from them in about a week, as they were still conducting interviews, and would be doing so for the next week.

Got a call the next day giving me the job. You're reading too much into it. It might be you didn't get it, but having them say they're still interviewing is not the reason to think that.

Yup yup so so true :). I had the interviewer tell me she was doing tons & tons of other interviews but she said I was a really nice person before I got the email & got the job! My niceness pays off at work but not in dating :o.

Since she didn't give you a time frame, maybe you should call her up in a week or so and ask if there's been some delay in the decision making. A lot of times those time frames are just guesses anyway. I once had to wait for a response for twice longer than promised - it turned out well in the end but it meant I had an extra two weeks to overanalyse what I did wrong or right in the interview and I really didn't need the extra stress!

So yeah, I'm afraid you've just got to try and relax about it. It's all out of your hands so now you play the waiting game. Best luck!

Man, I wish I could work for myself! What kind of work do you do? That must be great not having to deal with crappy bosses and co-workers. I just feel that I didn't answer some of the questions correctly, it was one of those "behavioral" questions.

I already know that I failed the interview, so I can kiss that job good-bye. Plus, I got vibes from the manger that she wasn't impressed with me at all. Oh well.

That's standard, nothing unusual about it. They won't stop planned interviews just because they have a good candidate. He as good as told you to call to follow up, so you should call to follow up right away and not wait for them to notify you. It's a test to see if you are really focused and proactive and do what you're told. Call today and tell them you just wanted to thank them for the interview and let them know you are very interested in the position and ask when they think they'll have made their decision. And then call back then too.

And unless instructed otherwise, I'd call, not text or email because that shows you're not afraid to talk to people and do business.

I had an interview through a temp agency yesterday and the guy was prepared to hire me on the spot (though they always have to go through the agency first when discussing pay and etc). However, this is rare as most places interview several people.

I was right! I didn't get the job, I had a gut feeling. The recruiter just emailed me and told me that the supervisor decided to move forward with other candidates. "We are still interviewing other people" is the indirect line when a person isn't getting the job. The same line was used 3 months ago when I went in and interviewed for a different company, and 2 weeks later I got that rejection email. No surprise there!

"We are still interviewing other people" means just that.

Sorry you didn't get the job. Next time!

Maybe in US. In Australia, all the bigger companies have a solid application closing date. Then they pick no less than 4-5 people to interview...they go ahead with all the interviews even if they have the best candidate. That's the standard procedure and means nothing. That applies to advertised positions only.

This is the standard process in the UK too

Not necessarily. I've been told that before and then got called up with a job offer the next day. However I went for a job recently and was told "if you're not successful this time, we're recruiting again later in the year." Now that is a smack in the chops - to get a comment like that bang in the middle of an interview. I knew I was one of the last to be seen, and my hunch was that they'd already settled on somebody.

It's just so easy to analyse an interview and think "they said this, so maybe I've got the job...but then again, they said..." I think it's best never to assume anything. To go in to the interview positive and confident - then, when it's all over and there's nothing more you can do, to prepare yourself for bad news. It's an awful process generally, and made worse by the poor handling of some HR departments.

Just quickly, a while back when I was doing some temping as a filler, I went for an interview that I didn't get. A few days later I got an embarrassed call asking if I could take on the contract after all on account of the person who did get the job letting them down. It wasn't a big deal to me, I was only doing it for a few weeks - so despite the fact that I wasn't their first choice I went along.

Once I was there, a guy asked me about the woman I'd replaced. He said that she had been absolutely awful and he was heartily glad to see she'd gone. I said "oh dear, since I was the second choice that doesn't say too much for me." He assured me that he was more than happy with me and that in his view the interviewers from the HR department had exercised very poor judgement in their first pick. And that was a senior figure in the organisation.

So don't let yourself get too downhearted. I've been involved in interviewing before, and been astonished about the bizarre choices colleagues (with final say) made - then been proved right in my instincts within a matter of days after the new start. The fact that a person is sitting on an interview panel doesn't automatically mean they're equipped with good people picking skills.

And even if you get rejected...you can still get an offer. I failed an interview for another position, at another institution before I got my current job. They sort of lead me on to think that I had the job right up until the last minute.

At the interview they even assured me that it's all just a formality and that I had it and they are just sorting out the salary details, my start date etc. When 2 weeks went by with no contact, I called them to be told that they have hired someone else. I wasn't too bummed out because I already had the interview for my current job lined up and I actually much preferred it.

After about 6 weeks of working here, the company that rejected me called me to tell me that another position has opened up and they want to make me an offer without the interview. I didn't even want to hear the offer as I am very happy where I am now. I got hassled with calls for a few weeks even though I made it clear I wasn't interested. The way they handled everything just makes me feel

So yeah.. don't read much into what's said during the interview.

That's a completely sh*tty way to treat a candidate. What astounds me is that these larger organisations and institutions tend to have large HR departments staffed by people who are supposed to be recruitment specialists. Yet often the people working in those departments seem less competent in the business of staff recruitment and staff management, and less equipped with good people skills, than your average small business owner who's having to play Jack of All Trades.

I, like the others here had an experience being rejected and then later called upon when the person who was hired did not pass the background/drug screen. I already started another job and it was such a hard decision, but I ultimately decided to stick with the job I had already started. But the agency the contract job was through was extremely pushy for me to take the job anyways.
