Is anyone else bored with their jobs?

Recommended Posts

Right now I feel so left behind. I'm going to turn 27 on April and still a college student (well it's a long story and I went back to school by mid 2011) but will be done by 2015.

So many people my age or even younger are either promoted already or actually have their own business. My goal is to invest money making my own business that relates to my major as I'm already tired of working for someone and never being promoted to higher, in which you actually work as a team with the company. I've been for years since the age of 21 working in nothing but call centers in either the billing department, doing pathetic sales script and right now I'm only doing verification.

Though it's great that I don't have to sell anything and it's a quick yes/no answer, it has one thing in common with all my other positions in former jobs; making calls, reading the same script over and over again, deal with certain rude people who think we like calling them and not understand that we can't change our assigned schedule (I hang up on the few rude people so fast they don't even have a chance to continue screaming or saying a foul word), the company not respecting Thanksgiving Day nor other Holidays except Christmas and probably New Year and the very fact that my job requires no special skill at all.

No, we're on LS for the health benefits!

Dude, why not look for another JOB?

Transfer to a different city, change your life!

Oh, and don't freaking call me after 8pm...

I'm in my homecountry and it's hard to find decent job positions (much less get promoted) if you don't have a college degree nor on your last semester.

I do want to change my life but have to finish college in order to get what I want.

Yeah the means justify the ends I guess. I sure don't want to forever be calling people.

Was asked once in a rude way if I got anything better to be bothering people? Off course this is an immediate hang up as there is no point in arguing or even try to rebuttal since it's not a sales nor complaint section (just simple yes or no call).

Inside my mind my imaginary answer would have been something like: Oh hell yes I do. I'm studying and I'm using the money I'm earning from doing this BS you call it to pay for my damn classes and get my degree. I'm using this work to make my damn future. I like spending time with my family on my spare time and reading books as well as watch history and discovery channel. Thank you.

Sorry you have to deal with this crap. I was at my last job feeling like that the second year. It was a dead end job with no future. I was lucky to find something else shortly after getting my degree. I cannot stand talking on the phone, but I give you kudos for doing so. I couldn't deal with that crap. Luckily, I do not have to talk on the phone for my new job... it's all online. As for your age, don't worry about it. My husband and my brother are 30 and 28 and still finding themselves, so cut yourself a little slack. :)

Dude if you did NOT find working at a call center boring, I would be concerned!

I too hope to someday strike out on my own. Although I know there will be boring parts of that just as much, if not more than being told to do something at my job that I do not care much for. I work as a full time artist, so it's a "fun" job, but there's no getting around the times where hard work to grind through things is necessary.

Wait 'til you're 45 and working at a call center! And I agree - talk about boring, miserable work. All I can do is code, code like a beast, work on my novel, and dream of my eventual escape....What's your escape plan?

My plan is to continue studying till I get my degree. That's the only way.

Yeah, I'm bored right now esp when the Holiday is approaching. If there is something more pathetic is also have those hanging up if it's really a wrong number or a not available, then possible complaining if the number get called again later on. Duhhh..... if you don't say anything other than hanging up when asking for the name, it's an immediate call back and a total waste in the database; waste of time for both them and us having to call that number again.

I'll be happy when it's finally over and get a real vacation from all of this.

We are usually bombarded this time of year. It's amazing how many people call and have absolutely no clue what company they are doing business with. Over and over again I ask callers, "Well, what company did you make the transaction with?" They not only have no idea, but act miffed that you can't a) read their minds and explain to them who they gave their credit card to, and b) perform service on a transaction that they did with a completely different company.

It does not get any better. Even with your own business it can get boring or you can hate it when your business fails and you would have made more money sleeping on the couch all day.

It usually takes a couple tries to have a successful business.

But I think the majority of people do not like their jobs.

It's because it feels pointless and it's all about coming on time, doing what you're told to do and waiting for the paycheck; basically a robot that is only there to take orders. Nothing else. You can be the best worker but never get promoted. Edited by samsungxoxo

Working as an Elementary School Substitute Teacher was never boring. Being an Art & Music Teacher for a Catholic School was very stressful, but definitely never boring. Yoga Instructor, never boring. An Assistent Manager of a clothing store, never boring. Cashier, EXTREMELY BORING! Administrative Specialist Graphic Design and Database Development (and anything else they wanted to through at me) extremely varied and fun, never boring! Webcam Model, never boring!

I guess I've been blessed as most of my jobs were never monotanous or boring. :)

Ok so the only good news; I can finally use my Day Off, which is Monday to get all the Christmas preparation. Then on the 25th is definitely Off for everyone..

By Monday, I'll have time not only to buy all the presents and stuff but also have more time available to do my academic research assignments and reading my course materials.

At least that's the only good thing; it respects Christmas.

You're so luck. You like that because it's something within your field. Waking up people in the mornings and continue calling is sure not within a study field.

Reflect on your interest(s). Start your own little business. After development, advertise on the net & pass out cards/flyers in your free time.

This is how I felt too....working in international sales, working even at NASA, despite the other job satisfaction.

When you work for someone, it is easier, but you are only a machine like the office printer. Something or someone that the owner makes money from. They may be nice, caring people and care for you as a person, but they are still marking up the value of your labor and re selling it. How do I know? I have several employees! ;)

Tourism and international business organization, along with travelling.

I was curious because I was hoping it was not another office job. Excellent choice! :)

I am in this field with one of my businesses.

I am bored as hec. The COO and I had lunch and even he said he was afraid my job was kinda beneath my intelligence and was afraid I would leave.

I NEED a job as I have over $70k in student loan debt. I've also been at all my previous jobs for exactly a year (2) and 1 for 9 months due to him stop paying me so I don't want to look like a job hopper (although in my field(s) it's not frowned upon).

Most people would be happy to have a decent (not necessarily "GREAT") paying job with full benefits and a CEO who cares about his staff. My boss and supervisor are awesome and I love my team. They give us lots of other perks too like lunch all the time, weekly massages, free breakfasts, yoga, sports games, parties, etc. All of the executive board members are approachable and friendly. They don't even want their own private offices! We also can earn extra days off using our over time hours plus one extra day off in your birthday month so I can have 21 days off (26 after 3yrs) in addition to national holidays AND he gave us an extra day during the holidays this year which us Americans know is FAR AND FEW. My last job in the States (before my last job in Europe) only gave us a WEEK OFF (5 days) and the second year only 2 weeks off and I had to pay for insurance! It's like I'm in Europe again. We also have a good work/life balance in LA compared to NY with my boss often telling me to GO HOME. I love busting my balls, what can I say?

I'm gonna wait it out until I've had 3 years total of solid experience in my specific position which I will reach by this summer. Then I will take a nice long vacation somewhere exotic then start job hunting. I have my masters in my previous industry so I will go back to that industry with the 3yrs experience, same position and then my masters will count for something then I can truly make some $$$ and the economy should be even better.

My job is very VERY monotonous and I am mainly formatting (which I dislike and don't think I'm good at but I'm hard on myself). It's relatively easy. The most challenging part which I hope they keep is crunching and analyzing numbers which I love. I just need more high level projects that require critical thinking and where I can use my intelligence/skills. It's not going to happen any time soon. The glass ceiling in my department is also very very low so within a mere few years (like 2) you are pretty much as high as you can get within the department...I was able to convince them to let me do a high level side project which they love but that can only be done a couple times a year. I was going to doing for our major clients but that's not high on their priority list so it is what it is...

Like my job, (low stress, good pay, good people to work with) but still have a very high level of motivation to transfer to a bigger city where I grew up in. It is not for me to find someone new in a relationship in the small town that I live in, nor is there much to do in the realm outside of work.

I "kinda" like my job. My actual duties are pleasant, I enjoy managing people, and the pay is good, but one person and one person only is a deterrent to the whole store: the store manager. Other than this person, my job would be far more manageable (literally, I manage), though I do wish I was working at a job that actually used my degree.

TBH, even if you hate your jobs, always do your best and strive to do better. People take notice. Doors can open. The person that gives into defeat and becomes a drone to an organization will never get anywhere.
