I often find that I only get a few hours of sleep a night. My sleep cycle seems random. I'll go to bed early (as early as 8pm a few times, but never fall asleep until late i.e. 12m-1am), toss & turn throughout the night & wake up extremely early, about 2:30-3am & cannot go back to sleep. I've even tried staying up late in hopes to feel tired but still wake up extremely early.

Often times I'm lying in bed or wake up & my heart rate will increase significantly. I never recall any dreams when I wake up, so I know that's not the issue. That's when I have the best sleep, when I'm havingdreams.

Being extremely active (I exercise, clean, go outside) as soon as I wake up helps but I get so exhausted in the afternoon & feel as though I need to take a nap. This has, however, caused me to sleep as late as 8am to 10am. I prefer to wake up at 6:30-7am.

This isn't a problem I encounter on a daily/nightly basis. I really don't want to start my day at 3am. But I don't want to sleep the day away either. Anyone have any ideas as to what my problem might be? Suggestions?

Be careful of caffeine and the products it hides in like cola, Mountain Dew, chocolate. I have sleep problems too--always have. If I could I'd get a lifetime prescription for Xanax and take a little at bed time every doggone day. That's the one medication that works like a charm for me. But they are stingy as hell with it in the red state where I live.

I too have encountered sleep problems occasionally, although my problems are usually on the other end (falling asleep).

I've found that fish oil supplementation helps, though I'm not sure why. I started it up again after my brother (who sells supplements/vitamins) suggested it to me after I was complaining about my sleep issues.

I've also heard that a ZMA supplement can help quite a bit, but I have no first hand knowledge.

Over the counter melatonin is effective too, but I've found it makes it sooooo hard to pull myself out of bed the next morning.

I second Frisky's suggestion about avoiding caffeine, but I personally hate going through life without being all hopped up on caffeine :) j/k. It's something to pay attention to though. Also, if you're taking any pre-workout supplements that contain caffeine, yohimbine HCL, or 1,3 DMAA, that could affect your sleep too.

I took ZMA for a long time. It didn't get me to sleep but I definitely felt more rest and benefit from the sleep I got. It assists healing and I used it when aggressively weight training. It's worth a try though as a sleep aid--others might respond differently to it.

ZMA = zinc monomathionine

Yes.

It's the magnesium that does it, while it won't help you to fall asleep, it will keep you asleep when you do drop off, so it's useful for people like the OP who wake up early. I think it's something to do with it relaxing your muscles or something. I take a magnesium supplement nightly and it's helped my sleep lots.

I would suggest taking it 45mins before going to sleep with a small meal as you're meant to take it with food because it absorbs more of the 'goodness'.

One thing though; if you don't sleep well the first night you take it, don't take another one, wait until the next night. I've heard if you overdo it on magnesium you will have diarrhoea.

You may already be doing what is generally recommended:

Do not exercise, eat, or consume caffeine at least an hour before going to bed.

Have you tried controlling the temperature in your bedroom? Make it warmer? Make it cooler? Lastly, have you talked to your doctor? There are treatments, even holistic treatments, readily available for many types of insomnia.

Are you anxious, have stuff on your mind?

What helps me is; turning computer off an hour or more before going to bed.

Getting up at my usual time no matter how badly I slept, I was sleeping so badly I'd sleep in til 12pm to make it up for it but then couldn't sleep til 4am each night because of that long lie in, but you're clearly not having long lie ins anyway!

Writing thoughts/worries in a book before I go to bed.

Not eating or drinking anything near bed time.

Melatonin helps me fall asleep, I bought tablets from Amazon.

I'd recommend Paul McKenna's book 'I Can Make you Sleep'.

There's probably a reason they don't give him a load of it, might get addicted maybe, or long term health problems from taking it??

My doc will only give me a certain amount of sleeping tablets, which frustrates me at times, but I'm also grateful for it as she's doing her job in not wanting me to get hooked/dependent.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've just remembered when my sister had sleeping problem before. Merely same as you've going through right now. The one that prescribed by the pharmacist on her is the MX 5-HTP. It is a serotonin supplement that helps balance sleep patterns and promote deep sleep. I've read a blog recently that Omega 3 Fish Oil helps too as it balance your body's sleep patterns.

I'm new to where I live and don't know anyone to buy it illegally from. I sure don't trust ordering on-line w/o a prescription.

I've gotten addicted many times and kicked on my own. But I'm past using Xanax for getting high and would only use it for sleep. I have gotten prescriptions over the last year for anxiety and sleeplessness caused by it which resulted from a chemical imbalance I caused by taking a supplement that did me harm. I didn't abuse it any of those times and know that if I take just enough to not feel the high, it's an effective sleep med that doesn't complicate my life. Trying to convince a Virginia psychiatrist is another story.

Insomnia, the inability to get to sleep or sleep well at night, is an all-too common sleeping problem—in fact, it’s the most common sleep complaint. Insomnia can be caused by a wide variety of things including stress, jet lag, a health condition, the medications you take, or even the amount of coffee you drink. Insomnia can also be caused by other sleep disorders or mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression.
