Meditation..????

What are the benifits of meditation? Do you ever discover things about yourself when you do meditate? I'd like to try it, but trying to understand what the true benifits are from meditation?

I have no idea what the benefits of mediation are, or are supposed to be.

 

Personally: I only meditate briefly after completing a yoga routine, as part of the routine. I would attribute this more to the yoga than meditation: I find it incredibly relaxing, it helps me de-stress and feel more centered; I'm a calmer and nicer person when I'm doing yoga consistently, and it helps me work through any problems or issues I might be having. Usually things aren't as big of a deal as I make them out to be.
