There is a memoir I read a few months ago called "Look Me in the Eye: My Life with Asperger's" by John Elder Robison. It's an easy read, and an interesting insight into the life of an "Aspergian".

This guy is also the brother of Augusten Burroughs ("Running with Scissors", "A Wolf at the Table").

Childhood was the worst I just had no idea.

Hum... and why is that?

Who diagnosed you? have you seen a psychiatrist? have you had therapy? when did you find out? how old are you?

I know several children with Asperger's. They're my students. ;)

I don't have any in my family, so it isn't a matter of coping. I've worked with a lot of proactive parents and attended conferences to learn how to support the family and meet my student's needs.

Are we talking adults with Asperger's or children?

I was acused of having Aspergers by a family member. I really don't think I have it. But it made me look into the entire thing. It reminds me alot of OCD, because alot of people think they have OCD... and now I think alot of people think they have Aspergers... people almost seem proud of having it like it justifies them... I think there is a danger of labeling oneself and thinking about it constantly. Its basicaly high functioning autism

well if he is an adult let him worry about it. Aspergers isn't some seriouse problem that must be diagnosed, I know that much.

 Of course it is; it's a form of bloody autism. Obviously there are varying degrees to which people have it. Some can skate through life with only minor hiccups, others cannot socialise at all.

From my understanding, there is not much to be done at the adult stage as the syndrome and the way in which the person deals with it will have become ingrained. But I still think it's important to know if you have it. It would explain certain behaviour and stop people thinking you were just a jackass.

I think you have ADD you started off disagreeing with me then sort of agreed with me stating sinse hes and adult not as important, then put some insulting comment that must have just popped into your head and u started typing about if you have a mental issue its an excuse for being a Jackass ... not very pc of u

I can't just 'let him worry about it'.. I just can't.. he needs me... I think he's had this since he was a child.. so I feel responsible for not having 'seen' it before.

well like I said Asbergers is one of those popular mental conditions, you see it on tv and on the internet alot lately. The symptoms are easy to relate to so he may have tricked himself into thinking he has it. I don't think they were even diagnosing people with it until recent years

He has absolutely no clue... I haven't told him anything.. I am working something with his dad to have him referred by the family doctor to a psychiatrist..

I don't know how I will talk to him about it.. I have to find something.. I am sure he has it.. but he will freak out when I tell him I want him to see a shrink.. :o

Hey! I just wanted to let you know that two of my cousins have it (same mother, different father... so obviously shes the common denominator). One of them is 18 and has the mentality of a 12 year old..she was always different but not diagnosed until she was about 13. Shes very smart when it comes to science topics, but not really anything else.. She has trouble focusing and doesnt understand normal social cues that you or I can understand, for example when she hears jokes or if you say something but are "just kidding", she will think you are serious. She doesnt know how to respond to most conversations. She also cant look people in the eye, and usually has her head cocked to the side (Im not sure the real reason for that, but i know it has something to do with her condition). She is well aware that she is not like everyone else, and becomes really upset when people find out that she has aspergers... but i tell her that its nothing to be ashamed of, that its the way she was created and that theres no point in hiding it because people will always find out when they meet her.

My other cousin is 4, and is even lower functioning then her older sister. She is constantly in her own world. She wont acknowledge people at all, even if you are holding her & say her name. She doesnt act like other 4 year olds, who talk & do common "kid things".. shes also ALWAYS hyper & will not sit still for more than two seconds. You can just tell something is not quite right with her, even though she is still very young. She was diagnosed only a week ago, but its good that they found it when she is young so they can correct it....as much as they can anyway... hopefully by the time she is her older sisters age, she will be even better off.

I dont know if this helps, but I just wanted to share with you. Best of luck to your son. :)
