Why do I feel sad after getting rejected even though I knew I would?

I’ve basically learned to not get my hopes up when meeting a new girl. I’ve been rejected so many times in the past that I’ve hadn’t no choice but to create this defense mechanism for myself. I just met someone new, went on a few dates with her, and to my unsurprise, she said she wasn’t feeling a connection. I knew right from the beginning when I met her that this was going to be the most likely outcome. So why do I still feel bad?

Two questions:

How do you rate yourself as a conversationalist?

This woman who didn't feel a connection with you, did you feel a connection with her? If so, what was it about her which made you want to keep dating her?

I think you still had a sliver of hope. I mean... if you didn’t have a bit of hope, why would you even bother trying?

There’s nothing wrong with that (besides that it can hurt). Especially after a few dates. Lots of people would feel sad. I know I would.
