I'm 23 years old and just got out of a bad relationship. She cheated and it hurt.

But it also made me realize I haven't done much with my life. Yeah I just got a job with the post office and that's great. So I thought about taking my savings and going to college in new york? I know it's expensive but honestly it's not about the money for me. I feel like if I don't do it now then I may never. Help.

Have you been to New York ? I ask because of the weather, I was there in February and it was amazing if I was 10 years younger I would move myself

You need to follow your dreams when you are young, before you have responsibilities like a mortgage & kids.

NY is one the most expensive places to live. It's a city that will eat you up & spit you out Take a visit & have some savings before you jump into the City. Take a few basic classes locally at home or on line while you work before you spend the money for expensive tuition in NYC. You don't want to come out of college with no job & $100,000 in debt. Under certain circumstances, the post office may pay for part of your education. Look inot that.

What about living outside of Manhatten. Like Mount vernon or Queens/Astoria. Its not that expensive for housing in those areas right?

Queens isn't Chelsea, but it's fairly expensive in it's own right. Maybe Harlem or Washington Heights isn't that expensive if you are sharing a place.

But then you're living in Harlem, just to be in the general vicinity of New York. When you could pay less, and live downtown in the Twin Cities, or in San Antonio, or one of the many cheaper but functionally fun places to be young.

Manhattan is the most expensive of the 5 boroughs but they are all more expensive then almost the whole rest of the country.

If you can get a tiny studio (1 room) apt for under $3,000 per month, you got a deal.

Parking can be as much as $65 per DAY. Yes, you read that correctly.

Even fast food is about 25% more expensive in NYC (all 5 boroughs) then elsewhere.

Groceries are more. Yogurt that is 10/$10 in your store at home is easily $1.35 per container. A rotisserie chicken that is $5-$6 in the grocery store by you is about $7-$9.

Everything especially living space is much tinier. I have stayed in hotel rooms in NYC that were smaller then cabins on a cruise ship. Personal space is almost non-existent.

If you are going to move here be prepared financially and emotionally. Better to do it while you are young when you think little of stuffing 2-3 people into a 1 bath 0 bedroom studio because the rent split 3 ways is all you can afford & even that is tight.
