Throwing the "Men are intimidated" card

True story, tonight is a Singels Mix N Mingle Meetup event at a venue that I don't particularly care for as it's intermingled with standing room only strangers with the Meetup group.

The group typically has social events that aren't singles themed, but she decided to make this one special.

So far it's all women, and a couple of men that's RSVP'ed, probably like 20 women. Someone made mention of this and joked, "Looks like it's going to be just a girls night out!, lol"

It's interesting, you'd think men of the group would be rushing in, but not.

Then someone said, "The men are just intimidated by us independent women."

I mean, really? You're going to throw that card to get us to come out?

But, let's explore that...do you think men are just "intimidated" to meet these "independent' ladies?

I must admit, I am really baffled by this thread.

I mean, LATP, you've written several threads over the past several months about meeting women outside of OLD. Well, you finally hit was looks like a bonanza--all these single women in one room and so few men--and instead of appreciating that and charming the woman of your choice there, you complain about...some throwaway comment about men being intimidated? Talk about trying to grab defeat from the Jaws Of Victory!

To answer your original comment, who cares if or why some women said that, it doesn't affect you (after all you are there and "not intimated" right?). Forget that silly comment. Go charm the woman you're interested in.

Meanwhile, you will never charm anyone by arguing with them.

The person was probably joking.

Since you are one of 2 men among 20 single women, you will certainly get at least a handful of dates out of this. Looking forward to hearing about them all.

This should be a dream night for you LATP!

If hardly any men will be there - less competition! :)

Honestly, that comment was for fun and throw away - stop being so oversensitive - it kinda shows that yep, you are intimidated.

Roll and play with those kind of comments like most folk always do and it shows you are not intimidated.

You sound intimidated.

Meet ups are usually estrogen rich so should be able to find dates. But if you date in meetup, be aware:

1. The circle of people is relatively small

2. Women talk to each other

3. The lack of men ensures that they talk to each other a lot

You will develop a reputation over time, good or bad.

Seemingly the only men who are intimidated by a woman's independence are the ones whose primary methods of keeping a woman are to make her dependent on him. In other words, insecure men with very little to offer.

That being said, it sounded like a tongue in cheek joke that shouldn't be taken to seriously.

Actually, this isn't the first time this woman has said this, she has said the very same thing at a Christmas party she was hosting.

Say it once, you can take it as a joke, say it repetitively, then you tend to wonder what's going on in the head of host.

Hey, you read her mind! lol

  • 2 weeks later...

I haven't been to any singles events through meetup though the people I know who have been don't speak well of them. I've found my last few boyfriends through meetups so it's definitely possible.

I'm guessing the women were joking but men tend to not want to approach women in large groups IME so there probably is a bit of truth in it if the numbers don't stabilize.

In my interests, the meetups tend to skew towards men but if a guy has a bad reputation it does get around.

OK so why aren't there more single men going to events such as this that are full of women.

Sometimes "jokes" do hit on the truth though...

So what we have is one bitter woman.

It's not a "card" meant to encourage men to come along.
